Drainage project: BMC razes 140 structures

Express News Service Tags : Drainage project, mumbai Posted: Wed Jun 02 2010, 23:43 hrs

Mumbai:  The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday demolished 140 structures near Irla nullah in Juhu to make way for the BRIMSTOWAD project. These structures were situated on the edges of the nullah. The 500-metre stretch on the Gulmohar Road was cleared and handed over to the Storm Water Drains department, said ward officer Ramesh Pawar.

Of the 280 families living in the area, 103 are eligible for rehabilitation, said Ramesh Pawar. Of these 103 families, 50 have been rehabilitated in Jogeshwari and the rest of them have been rehabilitated in Dahisar, he said. No homes have been provided to those who had come in the area after 1995, said Pawar.

Though the Irla pumping station is ready, the nullah has not been widened yet. Hence, the areas of JVPD and Vile Parle are prone to floods, he said. The Irla pumping station is expected to start functioning in a week, said officials.

As part of the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drainage (BRIMSTOWAD) project, the pumping station has been built at key catchments areas near Irla nullah in Andheri.

According to officials, Irla pumping station project will bring respite to residents of Milan Subway, Andheri East, Santacruz West, areas near Vile Parle station and Sahar Road Junction.

GHMC yet to fix nalas despite having funds

June 1st, 2010

Hyderabad, May 31: Despite the fact that Rs 260 crore was sanctioned under the JNNURM scheme to the GHMC to remodel and widen storm water drains, the work has not been done. As a result, citizens will have to deal with another monsoon of flooded streets and colonies.

As many as 25 important nalas (drains) that over-flow and inundate localities during heavy rains were to be widened. And even though the desilting of the nalas has been taken up, it isn’t enough to prevent flooding in low lying areas.

The nalas need to be widened and remodelled so that the rain water discharge capacity of these drains increases but no major work has been done even though the GHMC has the funds.

The civic body has failed to remove around 2,000 encroachments that dot these nalas. The project cannot be executed unless the encroachers are evicted. Besides about half-a-dozen nalas on which work has begun, the GHMC has failed to remove encroachers on the rest of the sites.

At present, the width of a majority of these nalas is as narrow as 10-feet at several stretches, while the maximum width should be 60-feet. Tenders were invited by the civic body and contracts were given to private agencies to finish work on the widening by May 30. However, work hasn’t even started on several nalas. The GHMC officials defended their inability to act saying that “political will” is required for the removal of the encroachments.

Even the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has not completed the desilting of the sewerage drains. The sewer network that runs up to 18,000 km in the city is maintained by the HMWS&SB. With just a little rain on Sunday, the sewer drains are already over-flowing with rain and sewerage water.

MC plans to open more apni mandis in southern sectors

Express News Service Tags : corporation, open more apni mandis Posted: Tue May 25 2010, 05:20 hrs

Chandigarh:  The Municipal Corporation is contemplating extending the benefit of day markets to more sectors of the city. The civic body will soon be writing to the UT Deputy Commissioner for allowing markets in Sectors 49, 51, 52 and Dadumajra.

A discussion on the issue was held during a meeting of the Apni Mandi and Day Market Committee of the civic body on Monday. The day markets provide a platform to vendors and farmers to sell fruits and vegetables directly to residents.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of councillor Jagjit Singh Kang and attended by other members of the committee.

Members decided that the feasibility of starting markets would be discussed with the sub-divisional engineer concerned in the next meeting of the committee.

After this, a letter would be written to the deputy commissioner. The aim is primarily to cater to residents of southern sectors.

The committee also decided that the slips will be issued to vendors up to 5 pm and the enforcement staff will take action against defaulters.

Certification regarding verification of weights and scales will be obtained by the UT Weight and Measurement department by each vendor by June 7 and after that an inspection will be carried out by the committee members for checking violations.

Appropriate legal action will be taken against erring vendors if any discrepancy is found. It was further decided that a water tanker will be provided by the Public Health Wing of the civic body at the markets.
