NELLORE: The Municipal Corporation of Nellore (MCN) will soon submit a report to the State government for Rs.740 crore for taking up underground sewerage system and Storm Water Drainage (SWD) projects in Nellore city, said Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy.

Speaking at a review meeting with the officials here on Sunday, the Minister said the State and Central governments are taking up the works under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) which was being implemented in other cities in the State. NCPE Infrastructure Private Limited, managing director S.M. Subhani, who is taking up the projects, submitted the detailed project reports prepared for sewerage and SWD for the next 30 years (up to 2041) for a population of 8.12 lakh.

The underground sewerage system would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 404 crore and the SWD with an estimation of Rs. 336 crore, he said. Mr. Subhani explained that the city was divided into five zones for the underground drainage system. For Storm Water Drainage, NCPE has identified 27 catchment areas and the consultancy has proposed to construct new drainages along 400 km with Rs.155 crore.

Thrissur: A meeting of the District Planning Committee (DPC) held here on Friday approved development projects submitted by the local bodies. In all, 1,670 development projects with an outlay of Rs.62.13 crore were approved to be implemented by 15 local bodies in the district during 2009-2010.

The committee chaired by district panchayat president Ambadi Venu withheld approval of some of the projects, which did not comply with the guidelines given by the government. The committee asked the local bodies to re-submit those projects with necessary changes. Development projects submitted by nine grama panchayats (Vallachira, Thiruvilwamala, Vallathol Nagar, Chelakkara, Edathuruthy, S. N. Puram, Perinjanam, Mathilakam and Kaipamangalam), four block panchayats (Kodungallur, Cherpu, Mathilakam, and Anthikkad) and two municipalities (Chalakkudy and Irinjalakkuda) were sanctioned by the DPC.

Of the total outlay of Rs.62.13 crore, around Rs.21.57 crore will be from the Plan fund and the rest from the local bodies’ own fund and beneficiary contributions. Some of the projects discussed by the committee in detail were regarding improvements in noon-meal scheme and providing transportation facilities for girl students belonging to the Scheduled Caste communities.

A project submitted by Perinjanam panchayat sought permission to provide additional nutritious food for school students in addition to rice and green gram distributed the by the government. S.N. Puram panchayat sought permission to provide bicycles for girl students

belonging the Scheduled Castes.

The committee observed that such schemes should be part of general education development projects and needed more discussion.

District planning officer P.P. Johny, expert committee member M.N. Sudhakaran, district panchayat vice-president T.R. Ramesh Kumar, council members and local body leaders participated.

BBMP submits lakes revival project

The BBMP, on Thursday, submitted before the Lok Adalat, comprising Justice K L Manjunath and member Yellappa Reddy, that a mega project with an estimated cost of Rs 900 crore has been taken up to rejuvenate and revive 183 lakes in the BBMP limits.
  

The Palike Commissioner Bharath Lal Meena in his submission regarding the measures to protect the water bodies in the City said that it has already developed 25 lakes and is in the process of developing the remaining ones.

Explaining the strategy adopted to develop these lakes, he said that the first step would be to survey the lake within the next one and a half month. It will be followed by fencing of the lakes.

“An estimated Rs 100 crore will be utilised for this,” said Meena. He said that it will be followed by desilting and planting of trees and the last phase of work would comprise removal and clearance of encroachment. He said that the State as well as the Union government would be approached for funds.
