Pune: While the civic administration is trying to rehabilitate those who lost their homes to the fire that gutted the Ambedkar Nagar slum two days ago, the standing committee has asked the administration to start a crackdown on illegal businesses in slums across the city.

On Tuesday, the standing committee asked the civic authorities to initiate action against the illegal activities, to avoid similar incident in future. “We have given instructions to the civic officials to crackdown on illegal activities in slums,” said Arvind Shinde, standing committee chairman. “We will try and accelerate the housing schemes under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority. We will soon take up the issue with the state government,” he said.

“Along with the district level authorities, the civic administration has been taking a lead in extending help to those who have lost their shelter and are forced to live in the open. Therefore, to support them, we have raised a few temporary shelter and provide them with food. Most of them have also been given utensils to cook,” said deputy commissioner of PMC Suresh Jagtap.

He said, “Though some of them are put up in the nearby schools, many are at the huge tents raised by the PMC. Our workers are clearing the debris. At least 100 people are involved in these activity. We are also providing them with necessary material to construct temporary shelters.”
