Illegally-built deluxe toilet razed

Staff Reporter | New Delhi

A major fraud by MCD officials was brought to light on Wednesday when it was learnt that right in the heart of the Capital a company, in collusion with municipal officials, constructed a high-end toilet complex on the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg without participating in the tender process.

The toilet complex which was almost complete was razed down on Wednesday afternoon. The illegal toilet complex came to the notice of none other than Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, who during an inspection visit pertaining to BRT on the BSZ Marg, enquired about the construction activities and what was it related to.

According to sources, “Mehta had gone to inspect the BRT corridor and noticed this almost complete structure and asked the MCD to remove it,” said an official. According to the civic body, this structure was also coming in the way of BRT corridor. The MCD official also maintained the complex was being constructed illegally by a company, which had not participated in the financial and technical bid which was mandatory.

It was further stated that out of the 20 companies that did not participate in the financial and technical bid, a few of them had already started constructing the structure. However, the civic agency claims that they all have been demolished now.

“We had come out with a public notice asking companies to construct high-end toilet complexes, whose quality was to be judged by a group of experts. A total of 28 companies had participated and a day after we had given them various sites to construct the prototype. After a while they were supposed to participate in the financial and technical bid. However, out of the 28 only eight came forward and submitted their papers. Hence, only those eight were given the go ahead,” said a senior MCD official.

The civic agency had recently received a lot of complaints from the residents against the luxury toilet complex which was being constructed at Defence Colony. Eight luxury toilet complexes have been constructed in areas such as GK I, CR Park, Defence Colony, Model Town, East of Kailash among others.
