MCD demolition drive continues

Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday continued demolishing unauthorised constructions in South Delhi area built during the recently concluded CW Games in the Capital

The corporation started a major demolition drive against all such structures on Tuesday. It started with Central zone. which will go on across the rest of the 11 municipal zones in the coming weeks.

The corporation has demolished over 30 unauthorised structures across areas like Huaz khas, lajpat Nagar, Sarita Vihar, Amar Colony and Govindpuri on Wedensday.

"We could not take action against illegally raised construction as police force was not available during several days due to the Commonwealth Games for carrying out demolition action. Taking advantage of the situation, the builders lobby carried out a lot of unauthorised construction thinking that no action will be taken against them. We started with our drive from Tuesday and will continue in the future too," said a senior MCD official.

"This demolition action drive against unauthorised construction activities is also meant to send a message across to unscrupulous builders to respect laws and the state protocols, the civic body is in no mood to giving respite to offenders; travesty of law will not be tolerated," he said. MCD will further intensify its demolition drive in the coming weeks with extra staff and required police force. Action was initiated in South Delhi areas including South Extension, Lajpat Nagar IV, Pul Pehladpur, Shyam Nagar among others.
