Anti-encroachment drive by MCD, cops ends in a whimper

PNS | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and police ended the anti-encroachment drive without taking a concrete action against the rampant encroachment on footpaths in major commercial areas of Dehradun.

Earlier, MCD and local police had launched anti-encroachment drive in Paltan Bazaar and other adjoining commercial areas just prior to Diwali with much fanfare. The MCD had even seized goods of small roadside vendors and claimed that the encroachment will be removed at any cost.

At that time, traders had raised questions over the intention of local body and police to carry out anti-encroachment drive during festive season which had caused them substantial financial loss. It appear that there some hidden purpose of local body and the police to carry out anti-encroachment during festive season as no action in this regard has been taken thereafter.

Besides disorderly parking of two wheelers at both sides, the traders continued extending their shops beyond their legitimate limits and entirely encroached upon the pavement made for pedestrians. The roadside vendors who placed goods on roadside and cart vendors left little space for the shoppers and other commuters too move in the Bazaar.

MCD officials, who had carried out the drive with a bang and had even removed the encroachment forcibly for two continues days, ended the drive without making any visible difference on ground.
