Illegal construction goes unabated under MCD’s nose

Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Even after the fatal incident of a building collapse in Laxmi Nagar about a fortnight ago, the civic authorities do not seem to have learnt their lessons. Illegal construction is still going on in the city, despite the fact that the Vigilance department of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) recently visited several areas where the constructions are going on.

Following a complaint, the Vigilance department of the MCD deputed a special team to identify ongoing unauthorised construction in several areas of Shahdara (south zone) in East Delhi. In this regard, Vigilance team conducted the inspection in Ward number 231 and 232 of Shahdara (south zone) from August 17 to August 20, 2010 and on August 23, 2010.

During the inspection, ongoing building activities were noticed but according to sources, but no concrete step was taken by the civic agency to stop the illegal constructions. Sources revealed that till date unauthorised constructions are going on in the areas where the inspection was conducted.

According to official records, the inspection was done in Ghondli, Anarkali areas of Shahdara (south zone) which includes localities like New Govind Pura, Brij Puri extension, Radhey Shyam Park, Baldev Nagar, Jagat Puri, Radha Puri extension, Gopal Park, Arjun Nagar, New Layal Pur, Aram Park, South Anarkali, Ram Nagar, Chandu Park, Rashid Market,Shastri Nagar and Chande Nagar.

The issue of unchecked growth of illegal construction in the capital has come under scanner after a multi-storeyed building having two illegal floors collapsed in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar here on the night of November 15. Lalita Park also falls under Shahdara (south zone).

Meanwhile, in last three years, action has been initiated against over 530 officials of MCD for their alleged involvement in allowing illegal constructions, an issue on which the civic body faced much flak after a recent building collapse here killed 70 people. In the three years since 2007 and the current year up to November 15, a total of 8,030 complaints had been received by the MCD regarding unauthorised constructions. On the basis of gravity of allegations, 357 of them were taken up for investigation by the Vigilance department of the MCD.
