MC removes kiosks from Gill Road

The tehbazari team of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation removed 20-odd kiosks from Gill Road on Thursday. There are a total of 234 kiosks on the road and their owners had been told to pay their outstanding dues so that they can be given space below the Cheema chowk bridge. However, despite repeated reminders, a majority have not deposited their dues. On Thursday, as many as 39 of them categorically refused to pay anything, after which the demolition exercise was carried out. There was an argument between MC officials and those running the kiosks, but the former were able to start the drive by late afternoon. While nearly 50 people agreed to pay the pending fee by Friday, the rest cleared their dues.

MC Joint Commissioner M S Jaggi said: “If these 50 people do not submit the fee, their kiosks will be razed, too.” Most of the people running kiosks on Gill Road had not paid their yearly tehbazari fee to the MC. The MC has given them an option of paying the amount in three instalments of nearly Rs 15,000 each on an average.
