Tannery road demolition work starts

The BBMP, on Thursday, started a demolition dive on Tannery Road to make way for the road widening project.

BANGALORE: After warnings and notices, the BBMP on Thursday started work on demolishing the identified structures on the busy Tannery road under the transferable development rights (TDR).

The demolition started on Thursday morning, Thirteen BBMP buildings which were given for lease were the first ones to be brought down.

The demolition drive will continue for the next few days and about 700 business establishments have been identified to be razed, said a BBMP official.

“While about 200 property owners have already come forward to accept the TDR scheme, the rest are filling in the forms now for TDR,” he said.

The 3.5 km stretch, from the entrance of the road (Doddi) up to the Nagawara circle, will be widened to 80 ft and the stretch would be an alternate link to the Bangalore International Airport. However, few residents are not happy with the TDR scheme because under the scheme, the property owners can have an additional built up area on the remaining portion of the land, but there is no compensation provision.

There will be no monetary compensation under this scheme, said the official.
