Ahmedabad: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Monday carried out a demolition drive at Akota to clear the area for an overbridge between Akota and Dandia Bazaar. As many as 300 hutments were demolished.Hutments near Dandia Bazaar were already removed as some of the residents had vacated the place on their own. The drive towards Akota was put on hold due to the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations.
“Most of the residents had vacated their houses as we had served notices well in advance. The operation was carried out without any hassle. Now that the land is encroachment-free, construction work will begin soon,” said an official of the bridges department, VMC.
Meanwhile, VMC has also initiated construction work at the Jetalpur bridge, which was on hold for long.
Since Western Railway authorities have given us permission to take up the job on our own, we have given the contract,” said VMC Commissioner M K Das.
