MCD demolition drive continues

Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday continued demolishing unauthorised constructions in South Delhi area built during the recently concluded CW Games in the Capital

The corporation started a major demolition drive against all such structures on Tuesday. It started with Central zone. which will go on across the rest of the 11 municipal zones in the coming weeks.

The corporation has demolished over 30 unauthorised structures across areas like Huaz khas, lajpat Nagar, Sarita Vihar, Amar Colony and Govindpuri on Wedensday.

"We could not take action against illegally raised construction as police force was not available during several days due to the Commonwealth Games for carrying out demolition action. Taking advantage of the situation, the builders lobby carried out a lot of unauthorised construction thinking that no action will be taken against them. We started with our drive from Tuesday and will continue in the future too," said a senior MCD official.

"This demolition action drive against unauthorised construction activities is also meant to send a message across to unscrupulous builders to respect laws and the state protocols, the civic body is in no mood to giving respite to offenders; travesty of law will not be tolerated," he said. MCD will further intensify its demolition drive in the coming weeks with extra staff and required police force. Action was initiated in South Delhi areas including South Extension, Lajpat Nagar IV, Pul Pehladpur, Shyam Nagar among others.

Mohali:  The allottees of Sector 76-80 will stage a massive demonstration against the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) here on Wednesday. The Plot Allotment Sangharsh Committee has roped in several other unions to lay siege to PUDA Bhawan in Sector 62 here at 10 am onwards.

“We are demanding the speedy development and draw of remaining plots in Sectors 76 to 80,” said committee general secretary Parmdeep Singh Bhabat here today. They have appealed to the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to take personal interest for the allotment of plots and punish the delinquent officers concerned, who were creating hindrances in conducting the final draw.

The committee, which was spearheading the cause of those allotted plots in 2001 but were not yet given their possession, plans to stage a massive protest dharna and even block traffic, said Bhabat. The allottees were up in arms against the delay in allotment of 351 remaining plots.

The alleged that despite instructions of even CM and favourable decision of the legal litigation from the apex court, the GMADA officials concerned were making “lame excuses” to further delay the remaining allotments.

Officials go ahead despite resistance from a few merchants

Karwar: Acting upon the Lokayukta's orders, Haliyal Town Panchayat officials cleared the encroachment over a drain here on Tuesday, allowing easy flow of water.

While a few merchants tried to resist the move, the officials managed to clear the illegal constructions without yielding to their pressure.

On October 2, 2009, resident Govind Nagesh Teli had filled a complaint with the Lokayukta alleging that some influential merchants in the town had encroached upon the drain and illegally built structures over it.

He requested the Lokayukta to clear the encroachment and rebuild the drain. The Lokayukta officials visited the town on October 8, 2010 and inspected the area and found that the drainage area was encroached.

An ultimatum was issued to the town panchayat officials to clear the encroachment or face the disciplinary action. Speaking to the media, M. Ramesh, Chief Executive Officer of Haliyal Taluk Panchayat said that a project to rebuild the drainage was ready and would be presented in the next taluk panchayat meeting.
