106 places of worship to be demolished

Sept. 20: The Belgaum City Corporation (BCC) plans to demolish at least 106 temples, mosques and other religious structures that have been allegedly built illegally in the city, after serving their management committees with notices as required under the law. The demolition will be done by December 31, according to BCC assistant executive engineer Ramesh.

“We will serve notices to the managements of these structures shortly and complete the demolition process as soon as possible. There is no scope for the managements to move the courts against the move,” Mr Ramesh adds, explaining that the corporation may allow the temples and mosques to be rebuilt on other government sites after removing them from their present locations.

Most of the illegal religious structures are spread over about 2 km in and around Khadebazaar, in the heart of city . While 49 of them are located on roads, around 50 are found in open spaces that belong to the government. Among the alleged illegal structures are the famous Ashwatham temple in Pangul Galli, the Basavan Mandir in Basavan Galli, Maruti Mandir in Samadevi Galli and Datt Mandir in Gondhali Galli. The presence of these structures has for several years hampered development work like road-widening and also caused traffic problems as people have objected to the BCC removing them. But now the corporation is empowered by an order of the Supreme Court to take action, according to its officers.

The BCC is expected to submit within a week the list of structures to be demolished to the committee headed by deputy commissioner Ekroop Caur, which has been formed to oversee the demolition and gets its approval for the job. It also plans to hold meetings with the people and explain to them that it is acting on the orders of the Supreme Court, the officers add.

BMC comes down hard on squatters in market areas

Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Cracking down on encroachers at busy market areas of the State capital, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Sunday removed a number of sheds, counters, built-up areas exceeding the permissible limits and seized over two truck loads of material from Rang Mahal, Jawahar Chowk and MLA Quarters areas.

Additional Commissioner Kumar Purushottam and officials of the district police supervised the inquiry that continued for hours using JCB, cutting machines.

Meanwhile, in a separate drive, officials of the Project Wing of the Corporation removed four dairies being operated from Bagh Sawenia area of the city.

The inquiry was carried out after receiving directions by Bhopal Mayor Krishna Gaur in this regard. Notably, the BMC has been making efforts to shift all dairies being operated from within the city for past some time now.

A provision of allotting land areas on subsidised rates has also been made for the purpose. However, the efforts are yet to yield the desired results, as dairy operators are reluctant to shift from the places they have been operating for years.

Salt Lake civic body in bulldoze

KOLKATA: After years of inaction, Bidhannagar Municipality has begun a drive to demolish unauthorised buildings in Salt Lake, a move undertaken by the new Trinamool-run civic board.

Weeks ago, an illegal garage beside a building near the City Centre mall was demolished after locals complained that it was a nuisance in their locality. The civic authorities found that the structure had been built after bypassing building rules.

"We are receiving numerous complaints of such buildings mushrooming in the township, flouting prescribed building rules. We are conducting surveys and preparing a list of such buildings and will carry out demolition drives," said chairperson Anita Mandal. Mandal herself has taken up the responsibility of sanctioning building plans.

The new board has taken up the issue of illegal buildings quite seriously. Complaints about illegal extensions in commercial highrise complexes are pouring in from areas surrounding Karunamoyee and City Centre mall, which have both residential and commercial plots.

The civic authorities have also found that drainage and sewer lines of residential houses have been illegally connected to each other at many places. The authorities are sending notices to all households of the township, asking houseowners to disconnect drainage and sewer lines that are connected to those of other houses. The civic authorities will themselves take action if the instruction is not carried out, said sources.

Biswajiban Majumder, who was chairman of the previous Left Front-run municipality, had earlier come out with allegations that building rules had been flouted while constructing several hundred buildings in the township and that party bigwigs had ensured that the municipality did nothing to stop such illegal acts.

Though illegal transfer of plots and buildings violating rules is another issue, in most cases the houses that have been built violating rules are those that have been illegally transferred more than once. The civic body had received numerous complaints in the past of building plans being violated after being transferred to a new lessee. In many cases, violations in building rules have been made by constructing additional rooms or structures on top or behind a building.

In some cases, underground spaces have been constructed. According to civic estimates, more than 100 buildings in the township have been constructed in violation of building rules. In many cases, no action could be taken against the offenders as many of them moved court after receiving notices from the municipality.
