Unauthorised religious places in city to be razed

PUNE: Total 543 unauthorised religious structures have been identified by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). A list was prepared by the encroachment department of the PMC, which will undertake a joint drive with the police to remove them.

Ramesh Shelar, PMC’s officer on special duty (encroachments ), said the decision to remove these structures was taken at a recent meeting between PMC commissioner Mahesh Zagade and Pune police chief Satya Pal Singh.

“A number of issues were discussed which included unauthorised religious structures that have cropped up on public land. We have prepared a zone-wise list of these structures which counts up to 543. To take action against them, we need the support of the police . Yesterday, I spoke with the deputy commissioner of police and we will initiate action in zone I soon,” Shelar said.

First, those structures will be removed that obstruct the main carriageway of roads. In later phases, structures in the inner parts of the city will be demolished, said Shelar.

“We will start another drive against road-side food-stall owners that sell unhygeinic food that too without proper licence and are a threat to public health. We have informed all ward offices today and arranged manpower required. The drive will begin Tuesday,” Shelar said.

Shelar said the food-stall owners often violate rules of two departments - health and encroachment. “On most occasions , they seek licence from the health department to sell a particular food item, but end up preparing and selling something else. At times, they seek license from the encroachment department to sell wares, but actually sell eatables. We will take stringent action against all such food-stall owners,” Shelar said.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has started pulling down all illegal hoardings put up in the city by various political parties. The process would go on till May 30 when municipal elections are slated to take place.

“By illegal we mean hoardings that have been put up either without our permission or the ones that obstruct roads or lamp posts,” explained KMC Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.

Dozens of hoardings of various political parties have so far been pulled down in different wards of Kankurgachi, Manicktola and Rajabazaar.

“Teams from the Kolkata police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Municipal Returning Officers carry out the demolition work from 12 pm to 8 pm,” said Javed Samim, Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters).

State Election Commissioner added: “It is against law to put up hoardings on public buildings like government schools, colleges and hospitals. So, authorised teams are inspecting the wards and removing all such hoardings.”

Adding that for private buildings, the hoardings are being removed only after a complaint is lodged by the property owner, Pandey said: “The KMC removes illegal hoardings before each election. We demolish anything which violates the model code provided by the Election Commission.” The process began 15 days ago and will continue throughout the week, said Pandey.

Mohali:  Nearly 110 kiosks in Phase XI here were removed in an anti-encroachment drive held by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Thursday.

The tinshed shops were mushrooming over prime land between the BSNL building and a civil dispensary for over a decade, GMADA Estate Officer (EO) Balbir Singh Dhol said. With this, around four kanals of land, worth almost Rs 10 crore, was freed from illegal possession.

The operation, which began around 11 am, continued for over three hours as occupants themselves vacated the premises before a bulldozer pulled down the shops.

“The encroachers were asked to vacate the land voluntarily or be ready to face eviction,” said Dhol, while adding that the drive was carried out smoothly under heavy police protection by the enforcement staff. A few months ago, encroachments were removed from the same site but in the absence of any follow-up action, they had surfaced again.

Anti-encroachment drive carried out in Sector 19

The enforcement staff of the Municipal Corporation undertook a special drive on Thursday to remove encroachments on the passages in the rehri market of Sector 19. Initially, the shopkeepers resisted the drive but officials apprised them of the hazards in case of an emergency like a fire and they finally gave in. Nearly 500 encroachments were removed. Additional Commissioner P K Sharma said anti-encroachment drives will be carried out in all city markets.
