3,000 illegal hutments demolished in Kalwa

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) razed nearly 3,000 illegal hutments on the Mafatlal Compound in Kalwa (East), on Monday.

The corporation had filed an FIR after an official was prevented from performing his duty.

Fearing riots, there was heavy police security during the demolition drive. More than 500 policemen were deployed in the area.

“The illegal hutments had come up in the last two months. We had received a request from the court receiver to demolish the slums. Mafatlal company owners had taken some loan from a bank, which they didn't repay on time. The company had mortgaged the land for the same,” said B.G. Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner (anti-encroachment).

“The bank approached the high court some five years ago to take possession of the land. The matter is still pending in court. The land is under the possession of the court receiver,” added Pawar.

Hutments have encroached more than 50 per cent of the 265 acres, of which 65 acres belongs to the government, said Pawar.

Officials said that many of these huts were sold illegally by RPI leader Ramatai Pujari for Rs 70,000 each. Pujari was killed on Saturday.

But the slumdwellers claimed that they have been residing in the area for the last fifteen years.

“We have the survey number, ration card, election card and everything. We are facing these problems because of some new
hutments that have come up in the last month or so,” said Deepak Salve (38), a rickshaw driver.

“We were not even given a day’s notice. Where will we go now?” added Salve.

But Pawar refuted this allegation. “We had followed all the procedures and given them notices well in advance. They are all anti-social elements, some from Kurla and other areas, who have been externed,”said Pawar.

The TMC had carried out such a demolition in 2003 where 2,100 huts were demolished.

BERHAMPUR: More than 150 structures were demolished in a major anti-eviction drive in the city on Monday to clear up stretch of National Highway 217 that passes through it.

The demolition of unauthorised encroachments on both sides of the NH-217 from Gate Bazar area started from early morning. It continued till evening. Five platoons of police force were deployed to check any untoward incidents during this anti-encroachment drive. Berhampur sub-collector, Ajit Mishra, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sarat Mohapatra, city tehsildar Satrughna Kar monitored it. No untoward incidents were reported during the process although there were verbal protests from some traders whose business establishments fell prey to the bulldozers.

According to the sub-collector said no partisan attitude was shown during this anti-encroachment demolition drive. Ten permanent shops erected and rented out by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) were not spared. A dilapidated building of the BMC near Gate Bazar square, which served as library decades back was demolished. The large gate of the Kuthari temple which had been constructed on encroached land was pulled down.

Most city dwellers welcomed this anti-encroachment drive as Gate Bazar area had become a major constraint for traffic on the high way. Efforts are also on to streamline traffic at Gate Bazar square.

A bypass road from new bus stand road to Lochapada road is being constructed. The administrative officials said survey work was on to assess the encroachment on the constricted portion of the Lochapada road that connects to NH-217 at Gate Bazar square.

Pune: While the civic administration is trying to rehabilitate those who lost their homes to the fire that gutted the Ambedkar Nagar slum two days ago, the standing committee has asked the administration to start a crackdown on illegal businesses in slums across the city.

On Tuesday, the standing committee asked the civic authorities to initiate action against the illegal activities, to avoid similar incident in future. “We have given instructions to the civic officials to crackdown on illegal activities in slums,” said Arvind Shinde, standing committee chairman. “We will try and accelerate the housing schemes under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority. We will soon take up the issue with the state government,” he said.

“Along with the district level authorities, the civic administration has been taking a lead in extending help to those who have lost their shelter and are forced to live in the open. Therefore, to support them, we have raised a few temporary shelter and provide them with food. Most of them have also been given utensils to cook,” said deputy commissioner of PMC Suresh Jagtap.

He said, “Though some of them are put up in the nearby schools, many are at the huge tents raised by the PMC. Our workers are clearing the debris. At least 100 people are involved in these activity. We are also providing them with necessary material to construct temporary shelters.”
