Ahmedabad: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Monday carried out a demolition drive at Akota to clear the area for an overbridge between Akota and Dandia Bazaar. As many as 300 hutments were demolished.

Hutments near Dandia Bazaar were already removed as some of the residents had vacated the place on their own. The drive towards Akota was put on hold due to the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations.

“Most of the residents had vacated their houses as we had served notices well in advance. The operation was carried out without any hassle. Now that the land is encroachment-free, construction work will begin soon,” said an official of the bridges department, VMC.

Meanwhile, VMC has also initiated construction work at the Jetalpur bridge, which was on hold for long.

Since Western Railway authorities have given us permission to take up the job on our own, we have given the contract,” said VMC Commissioner M K Das.

Ludhiana: Additional Commissioner K P Brar conducts survey of area, councillor alleges bias by MC

After a massive demolition exercise in Jawahar Nagar camp in which over 500 illegal structures were demolished, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation will soon carry out the second phase of the demolition drive. Additional Commissioner KP Brar today conducted a fresh survey of the area and said 900 such encroachments in the inner lanes would be demolished soon. These encroachments have made lanes narrow as residents have constructed rooms, tiolets on roads.

The area has more than 1400 encroachments .

However, area councillor Kapil Kumar Sonu has alleged ‘pick-and-choose’ policy of the MC. While raising the issue in the MC House, he said,”I am not against the demolition exercise, but action should be taken against all. Before conducting the demolition drive in Jawahar Nagar in January, 17 encroachments of posh Sarabha Nagar were also marked but they have not been demolished till date while surveys after surveys are being conducted in our area.It seems that MC is focusing only on the poor while the rich are being spared.”

Sonu had asked the MC commissioner to be fair in the encroachment drives, which are carried across the city.

Ludhiana: The Disitrict Rifles Association has alleged demolition of the newly constructed boundary wall of the ‘Indoor Shooting Range for the Public’. Col J S Brar, President of the Association, said,”In May last year, Ludhiana MC had demarcated 5500 square yards to us on the backside of Orient Cinema. Encroachments were removed on April 28. On May 1, people who had already encroached upon the land, demolished the boundary wall and ran away. We have informed the police.”
