MC clears debris, shopkeepers pitch in

LUDHIANA: After carrying out the drive for demolishing illegal encroachments in areas surrounding Ghumar Mandi, one of the busiest commercial areas of the city, in an unprecedented action, municipal corporation (MC) is now clearing debris so as to ensure smooth traffic flow in the area.

For the last two days, teams of MC have been cleaning debris in areas like College Road. On Sunday, it was the turn of Ghumar Mandi locality, where shopkeepers had voluntarily removed infringements on their own. In what seems like an unprecedented act, teams of the civic body loaded the debris of removed encroachments in their vehicles to clear the commercial area and allow free flow of traffic in the locality. Meanwhile, shopkeepers continued to removed illegal encroachments on Sunday.

Lauding MC’s effort to remove the debris for vacating the space, JK Verma, a shopkeeper of Ghumar Mandi, said sensing that the shopkeepers had agreed to comply with their instructions, the MC authorities are co-operating with them. “We are always ready to co-operate with officers who work for welfare of people” he added.

Anti-encroachment drive continues

On the second day of anti-encroachment drive, the MC team today removed temporary encroachments from the College road, Bharat Nagar chowk and Cemetry road areas.

At College road, owner of Hind Saree showroom alleged that MC had even damaged the floor of his shop during anti-encroachment drive. The owner along with few others raised slogans against the MC authorities.

Another trader near the famous College road alleged that while MC team was removing encroachment from his samosa shop, his shop suffered damages as well.

At Bharat Nagar, the MC team was accused of adopting pick and choose policy. The MC team reputedly left encroachments in the form of ramps untouched after the shopkeepers promised that they would remove them on their own.

However, on College road, almost all the road-side encroachments were razed. The encroachers, it may be mentioned had been given enough time before the drive, but turned a deaf ear to the pleas of the MC.

BBMP JCBs at work near Ittamadu in Kathriguppe.

BANGALORE: In a major drive against encroachment, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Thursday morning razed about 10 houses constructed encroaching a rajakaluve (primary drain) alongside the Vrishabhavathi Valley near Ittamadu (KEB colony) in Kathriguppe.

Among the 45 houses surveyed, only 10 houses have been brought down by the task force of BBMP and the rest would be razed in the next four days, informed BBMP officials.

“Property worth more than Rs 20 crore will be demolished in the next couple of days,” said a BBMP official.

The drive which started early Thurday morning continued till 6 pm and the work continued inspite of protests from the residents. “After the survey was completed, we issued warnings and therefore there is no need for notifications,” said Srikante Gowda, executive engineer, Padmanabhanagar range.

Encroachments flourished in this area over the last 15 years leading to a reduction of the width of the drain from 15 ft to 8 ft, explained the official.

The demolition drive was a must to ensure that the rain water flows freely through the Rajakaluve without causing inconvenience to several other residents.

During rainy seasons, the area used to get flooded and overflowed from the drain. “But after the demolition, this problem would be solved,” the official said.

Around three JCBs and 100 gangmen were put on the job for the Thursday drive. “There was complete protection from the local police and task force police,” the official said.

EXPECTING A RAZE

Property worth more than Rs 20 crore will be demolished in the next couple of days. The Palike says this drive is a must to make sure that the rains will not wreak havoc on the residents around the drain.
