Finally, MC smacks a six after six flops

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation finally achieved some success on Tuesday, after six consecutive 'fiascos', with the demolition drives conducted in Sabun Bazaar, Brown Road and Jail Road (Field Ganj).

Having faced severe criticism after cancelling six demolition drives, succumbing to alleged political pressure, the civic body finally came back after demolishing 11 illegal structures on Tuesday.

Of the demolished structures, seven were in Sabun Bazaar, two on Brown Road and two on Jail Road. The buildings were reportedly owned by influential people, who refused to get their structures demolished in 2009-10.

"We had to face extreme resistance from people, who even turned to violent. But, the police brought the situation under control, and we managed to accomplish our target," said Kamaljeet Kaur, assistant town planner, Zone A, who led the drive.

Contrary to the previous six drives where around 150 police personnel accompanied the MC team and the drives were cancelled, on Tuesday, only 20 MC officials, 15 personnel from the city police and 15 from ladies police were successful in conducting the drive. This has certainly raised eyebrows on why the previous drives with a large number of police officials were unsuccessful.

"Despite the less number of police officials and pressure from people, we were determined to not return empty handed. People questioned us why they could not be spared if no action was being taken against illegal building in Gur Mandi. Police had to adopt extreme measures to control the crowd," Kaur added.

MC demolished the structures that had reportedly encroached upon public space by 2 to 2.5 ft.

The next drive is slated for May 8 in Barewal. In March and April, the civic body had cancelled drives in Pavitar Nagar, Gur Mandi, Talaab Bazaar, Haibowal, Salem Tabri and Indira Nagar.

25 houses demolished at Hijra Basti in city

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday launched a demolition drive at the Hijra Basti beside the National Highway between Rasulgarh and Vani Vihar in the city. Around 25 houses were demolished, officials said.

A month ago, the BMC had issued an eviction notice to vacate the ‘illegal’ settlement to facilitate expansion of the National Highway. After getting the notice, 120 eunuchs of the Vihar Hijra Basti had threatened self-immolation if the BMC fails to rehabilitate them before demolition of their houses.

The eunuchs said they have been staying on the NH side for the past 12 years. “If the BMC demolishes our houses, we should be given new houses to stay,” said All Odisha Hijra Association secretary Meera.

Notably, the BMC has decided to rehabilitate the eunuchs at Niladri Vihar in Chandrasekharpur, but the eunuchs suspect whether it can accommodate all the 120 persons.

Drive launched for removal of hoardings in Brahmapur

In a daylong joint operation conducted by the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Brahmapur Development Authority (BDA) and the Ganjam district administration removed many illegal hoardings from this city on Sunday in the first phase of the drive.

Earlier, the owners were informed to remove their hoardings, but they had not responded. During the operation which continued from 7 am to 5 pm, around 120 hoardings were removed from the Corporation Road, Khallikote College Road, Bijipur, New Bus-Stand, Old Bus-Stand, Gandhinagar and Railway Station Road.

Ganjam Collector Dr Krishan Kumar, SP Anirudha Singh, BMC Commissioner Dr Ajit Kumar Mishra, Brahmapur Sub-Collector Bijay Kumar Da and Tehsildar Rashmi Ranjan Nayak were present.

It may be mentioned that in February the BMC had issued a tender notice inviting interested parties to submit their quotations for undertaking the hoarding work in the city. A firm, Excellent Advertisement Agency, reportedly submitted its tender for Rs50 lakh for undertaking the work for 300 hoardings, 250 electric polls and 100 bulletins as per an agreement executed between the agency's proprietor Krushna Chandra Choudhury and the BMC. According to BMC sources, since the agency could not pay the amount in time, the authorities were compelled to remove the hoardings.

On the contrary, Choudhury said his firm had already fixed 120 hoardings earlier, and for the remaining hoardings the BMC was requested to identify the suitable places which the BMC is yet to do for which the amount as agreed was not paid.

The firm has taken shelter in court of law and would abide by the court order, said Choudhury. However, the BMC Commissioner said the operation for removal of all illegal hoardings would continue.
