Illegal bunds across river demolished

Special Correspondent

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has demolished two illegally constructed temporary bunds across the Kakkadavu river in its upstream to revive flow of water in the river as the drying up of the river has affected water supply to the Indian Naval Academy (INA) and to the nearby Ramanthali panchayat.

This was disclosed by KWA officials at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday to assess the drought situation in the district. When Payyannur MLA C. Krishnan told the Chief Minister that Ramanthali panchayat had not been getting water from the Kakkadavu river. The MLA said that alternative schemes should be planned for supply of water to the panchayat. The officials said water flow in the river was now expected to increase and water supply to the panchayat could then be normalised in a week. Tender process for constructing a permanent bund estimated at Rs. 80 lakh was under way and the work would be completed next year, they noted.

A.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, said the government should consider the proposal for a mini dam across the Aralam river as a standby source of water for the district.

Amid protests by fisher folk and BJP workers, officials of the Revenue Department and the GHMC on Thursday removed encroachments at the Chinnama Cheruvu at Ramanthapur on Thursday. The protestors later partially rebuilt the structure once the officials exited the scene. Officials said the management of the Ganga Bhavani Temple, which is situated in the Full Tank Level area of the lake, had taken up expansion activities despite official orders against it.

The management had constructed a compound wall on the encroached portion of the lake and was going ahead with the expansion work.

Multi-storey buildings demolished

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) removed illegal constructions measuring over 25,000 sq ft in Ghorpadi area on Wednesday.

One of the buildings had 36 flats, out of which 18 were occupied. Besides, the civic officials demolished a six-storey reinforced cement concrete (RCC) building (RCC), which had a parking lot on the ground floor and a five-storey structure above it, a statement issued by the PMC said.

"For the second consecutive day, the civic administration took action against multi-storey apartments. The administration had served notices to the owners saying that the construction was unauthorised. The owners were asked to demolish the building, but they did not take any steps. Hence, the civic officials and the police razed the structure despite opposition from residents," the officials said.

About 55 police officials and 30 workers participated in the drive. Two JCBs, gas cutters and other equipment were used for the work. Illegal sheds and concrete houses in slum pockets of Shivajinagar, Kasba Peth, Wadgaonsheri, Ambegaon, Kothrud, Katraj, NIBM Road and Pashan were demolished last week. The action was taken against residential as well as commercial establishments.
