GHMC to buy new tricycles for garbage collection

Special Correspondent

Close to 400 tricycles, each costing little over Rs. 8,000, will be procured

The new tricycles will be issued only after ensuring they are given to the right persons

HYDERABAD: There is hope as yet for several residential colonies to get replacement for worn-out tricycles used for door-to-door garbage collection.

Despite the Ramky deal for an Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Development Project, GHMC has initiated steps to buy news ones at least for the core city.

Close to 400 tricycles each costing little more than Rs. 8,000 are to be procured to phase out dilapidated vehicles in the erstwhile MCH area, said Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) S. Aleem Basha said.

There are about 7,000 tricycles in the twin cities including the suburbs being used for door-to-door collection and at least 2,000 need to be replaced as many were given more than five years ago. For some reason or other, the civic body had stopped procuring the tricycles despite heavy demand and the matter was also raised in the recent council meeting.

Ramky deal

With the Ramky deal, there is general reluctance to go for any new vehicle as the entire transport fleet is to be handed over to the private agency in phases.

But, exception is being made to tricycles considering it will take at least two years for the agreement to be implemented in full, explained Mr. Basha.

However, the new tricycles are to be issued only after ensuring they are given to the right persons, proper maintenance besides, ascertaining the number of households covered each one.

The change in the policy is because tricycles were issued pretty liberally to propagate the door-to-door collection in the beginning and there was no proper record on the usage and efficacy of the system, he pointed out.
