Sewage plant: MC not helping, says GMADA

MOHALI: Greater Mohali Development Authority (GMADA) filed an affidavit before the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday that municipal council was not co-operating in completion of sewage treatment plant (STP). Observing the status report, division bench comprising chief justiceMukul Mudgal and justice Ajay Tewari permitted it to implead MC through its executive officer (EO) as party in the petition.

In its affidavit filed through superintending engineer (SE), GMADA stated that instead of showing interest in STP, MC was creating hurdles. Though work of outfall sewer from Sector 76 to STP was initiated, plugging the illegal sewer connection in storm drains in sectors 72 and 73 that are under the charge of MC was not done. In March, the then SE had filed an affidavit stating that the STP would be operational by May 31.

The matter had reached the high court through a writ petition filed by Mohali resident Sampuran Singh.

He had raised the issue of pollution in Lakhnour Nullah in Mohali. The nullah was a seasonal drain but with the passage of time, the garbage and sewage water from Chandigarh and Mohali started flowing into it.
