Civic body plans to buy two mini incinerators
Engineering wing to conduct feasibility study
The City Corporation has asked its engineering wing to conduct a feasibility study on buying two mini incinerators to address the garbage management problem in the city. The move to procure two more incinerators comes close on the heels of the council deciding to set up similar facilities at the Chala and Palayam markets
The Health standing committee that met here on Saturday discussed the proposal. “We are taking a cautious approach on incinerators taking into account the past experience. The Public Works engineering wing has been asked to conduct a feasibility study,” said a civic body official.
It is also reliably learnt that the Hotel and Restaurants Association has offered to sponsor an incinerator having a capacity to process 150 kg of waste an hour.
“We held preliminary discussions with the representatives of the body. We are working on the modalities,” the official said.
Health standing committee chairperson S. Pushpalatha said the civic body was awaiting approval from the Suchitwa Mission to set up biogas plants in 27 locations in the city. The engineering wing was looking into certain anomalies in the project report. The 27 locations where 1,000 kg/day capacity plants will come up include markets at Thirumala, Kamaleshwaram and Jagathy wards. Pattom St. Mary’s School, Peroorkada GHSS and Vizhinjam LPS are among the 15 schools listed.
An outlay of Rs.2.35 crore is estimated, adding on to the Rs.4 crore for the 41 locations finalised last month.
