NDMC nod for construction of seven grade separators

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council has granted administrative approval and sanctioned Rs.75 crore for construction of foot over-bridges, underpasses and subways in the area falling under its jurisdiction.
The approval was granted at a meeting of the civic body earlier this month after the initial proposal for construction was granted in May 2008.
As per the project, three foot over-bridges would be constructed at Africa Avenue, Mother Teresa Crescent and Park Street, two subways would be built on Mandir Marg and Shahjahan Road and two underpasses at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Shanti Path.
The Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System, roped in as the turnkey consultants for the project, had earlier carried out a detailed survey of all seven proposed locations to decide which type of grade separator would suit them based on the present volume of traffic vis-À-vis volume of pedestrians. The project report compiled by them has also been approved by the NDMC.
All the grade separators are proposed to be completed by September this year. However, the subway on Shahjahan Road would be taken up after the Commonwealth Games due to non-clearance of the traffic diversion plan by the traffic police. In addition, the underpass at B.K.S. Marg would also be taken up after the Games.
“The final picture about requirement of an underpass and its feasibility will emerge only after the Games as several works are currently going on at B.K.S Marg such as construction of the Delhi Metro’s underground Airport Express line, multi-level parking construction, re-development of Hanuman Mandir and a parking facility near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib,” said an NDMC official.
Railways NOC
“Work has commenced for construction of the foot over-bridges at Africa Avenue and Park Street and the subway on Mandir Marg. Work on the underpass at Shanti Path was held up on account of non-issue of no-objection certificate by the Railways. However, following a meeting with the Chief Minister, it has been decided that the NOC would be issued by the Railways soon so that work on this facility can start,” he added.
