Local bodies told to complete projects in time

Panchayat and Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer said that the local bodies should take keen interest in the expenditure of plan projects.

He was speaking at the meeting on Thursday to evaluate the plan projects of the local bodies in Kottayam, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts for the year 2012-13. Though there were some problems in implementing the projects when the computerisation process was going on as part of the 12th Five Year Plan, it has now become more faster. He reminded that this year the expenditure of the panchayats will be far better than the previous year.

The minister also said that the local bodies should take the initiative for completion of projects on time. Evaluation of the project implementation should be conducted daily or on a weekly basis.

The meeting was presided over by District Panchayat president Remani P Nair. Panchayats Director S Lalithambika, Deputy director Syed, State Performance officer Divakaran Pillai and Pathanamthitta District Panchayat president Sajeev Chacko participated.

BMC will undertake Rs 8,000 crore water project

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and not the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will undertake the next water supply project for the city. The city will receive 865 million litres daily (mld) once the project is completed, which is expected in a decade.

MMRDA had announced in 2010 that it would develop the Rs 8,500-crore Pinjal water supply project at its cost. The state irrigation department had even granted in-principle approval for the project. But MMRDA recently informed the department that it was no longer interested in taking up the project as it has been able to tap water from other sources for the metropolitan region.

The BMC then approached the department and sought permission to construct the dam. "We have started work on the feasibility study, environment impact study and the land acquisition plan is being prepared,'' said Rajiv Jalota, additional municipal commissioner in-charge of projects.

The Pinjal project is part of the Damanganga-Pinjal link project, which is one of the 30 link projects, including 16 inter-basin links planned in peninsular India and three in central India. It will help augment 1,500 mld, of which 865 mld will be supplied to Mumbai.

It involves construction of a dam across the Damanganga, near Bhugad village, bordering Valsad district of Gujarat, and Nashik district in Maharashtra, and another dam across the Vagh at Khargihill in Thane district. The water will be brought to the Pinjal reservoir, which is to be constructed in Wada taluka of Thane district, through a tunnel. The water will be brought to Gundavali through another tunnel, and from there pumped to the city.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation opens Phugewadi subway for pedestrians

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has opened the subway under the eight-lane Mumbai-Pune highway stretch at Phugewadi near Dapodi. The subway had been locked since several months and was opened after this paper highlighted the issue in its Sunday edition (March 3)

Pedestrians and school students who faced a major risk while crossing the 61 metre highway, can now use the subway, which was built during the highway widening work four years ago.

Earlier, the PCMC had painted a pedestrian crossing right over the subway instead of opening it. However, there were no traffic signals on the road warning motorists to slow down for pedestrians.

Hundreds of people cross the highway stretch at Phugewadi as there are a school and a commercial mall located nearby. People also cross the road to reach the bus stops on either sides of the eight lane road at Phugewadi. The subway is a safe alternative now for the pedestrians to cross the road.

A traffic official pointed out the need to have a guard in the subway so that the pedestrians, especially school students would feel safe. Locals complained earlier that the subway was not safe for women and girls as the lighting was inadequate and there was no guard. However, the place now has adequate lighting. Incidentally, the PCMC has placed guards in the subway at Chinchwad.
