Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi on Sunday laid the foundation of a three-storey underground parking at New Friends Colony which will be able to accommodate over 500 cars at a time.

She said the work on the multi-level underground parking, which will be constructed at a cost of Rs.40 crore, has already begun and the project will be completed by September 30. The Mayor added that the underground parking will be spread over 12,089 sq. mt. and a green cover or park will be provided over it.

Completion on time

Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who was present at the event, said: “The problem of parking is emerging as a great challenge in Delhi, the solution for which lies in the vision and commitment of the Governments. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the past almost five years has worked hard to provide systematic and spacious parking spaces across the city.”

Ms. Abbi said she expected construction work to be completed on time.

“The rise in number of vehicles has increased parking problem in the city. However, the MCD is working hard in this regard. This multi-level parking at New Friends Colony is an effort to ease out the pressure of parking from an area which has two big hospitals and a hotel in its vicinity.”

MCD Standing Committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia said the project will be a “milestone for the civic body”.

Mentioning the proposed trifurcation of the civic body, MCD Works Committee chairman Jagdish Mamgain said the MCD had not introduced any new taxes in the past five years, but with the proposal of three corporations, “there are chances that new taxes would be introduced. Even then, citizens would be devoid of many facilities as the revenue through these tax collections would not be enough in the wake of three-fold rise in expenditure of the three corporations.”

Replying to nominated member Srinath during Question Hour, the Chief Minister admitted that there was delay in completing the works owing of hurdles in land acquisition, shifting of utility services and legal hassles. Attempts would be made to expedite works keeping public interest in mind.

Mr. Gowda said that the Government was prepared to conduct a survey on encroachment of civic amenity sites (CA) in various extensions and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) was taking steps to protect them.

Replying to M. Srinivas, the Chief Minister said of the 278 sites in 175 extensions in the city, 199 were yet to be allotted and no CA site had been encroached upon in the last 10 years.

On the delay in allotting sites to the farmers who have lost their land for the formation of Visvesvaraya Layout by the BDA, he said that land acquisition was at the stage of framing awards and allotment of sites would be made after completion of process. GHMC does a U-turn on TIP programme

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has dumped its grand plans to provide basic infrastructure facilities like roads, sewer and water pipeline network in the surrounding municipal circles in the city under the total infrastructure provision (TIP) programme.

Now, it has decided to take up big infrastructure projects like flyovers, bridges and road-widening works in the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (core area) limits with the Rs 600 crore being availed from banks and financial institutions soon.

A decision to this effect was taken by new GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu when tenders were being finalised for availing a loan of Rs 600 crore from financial institutions. The GHMC standing committee and the municipal administration and urban development (MA&UD) department have given their consent for availing loan from financial institutions a few months ago.

Officials said the GHMC will utilise the amount for taking up big infrastructure projects like construction of new flyovers, bridges, sports complexes, taking up road widening works and other projects like development of parks etc. As per the initial plan, over 20 projects and works have been listed out by the authorities to be taken up with the Rs 600 crore loan amount.

Sources said new flyovers have been proposed at Tolichowki (Rethibowli), Amberpet crossroads (where the proposals are pending for the last few years) and another flyover at Balanagar crossroads (Narsapur crossroads). Apart from the flyovers, pending bridges, which were not taken up due to paucity of funds like rail under bridges like Safilguda, Kandikalgate and Uppuguda, would be taken up. It was also decided to construct two more bridges across the Musi between Attapur and Puranapul for free movement of traffic. A bridge across the Musi is being constructed near Race Course in Malakpet, which is likely to be ready in a month.

"Apart from flyovers and bridges, road-widening works, including junction improvement, construction of sports complexes and development of parks, would be taken up with the Rs 600 crore loan amount," a senior GHMC official told TOI.

However, analysts say the latest decision of the corporation would hamper growth of nearly 800 colonies in the peripheral areas of the city. Earlier, the corporation had planned to implement TIP in authorised layouts, but later decided to extend the programme to unauthorised layouts too and areas which lack basic facilities in the core area on the request of Majlis Ittehadul-e-Muslimeen (MIM) corporators.
