RMC yet to cover up filthy drains

Pioneer News Service | Ranchi

Even though only six days are left for the Durga Puja, the filth, garbage, and dirt still rule the roost around the pandals. Foul smell from open drains exposes sluggishness of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the officials those responsible to execute cleanliness drive just before the puja. Drain covering task is yet to be completed.
Alike last year, hundred of puja pandal have been set up the town. But five of them are major pandals, including Bharatiya Yuvak Sangh and Rajasthan Mitra Mandal in Upper Bazaar, two puja pandals near Harmu road and one near East Market. So far, RMC has yet to take cleanliness drive around these pandals. Open drains around the pandals are sure to be proved hazardous for the huge crowd surges that surges during puja.

Open drains caused severe inconvenience to the people last year. Some of the people suffered injuries after slipping into drains as those were lying uncovered. To avoid repetition of such incidents, the RMC has chalked out a plan to cover the drains around all major pandals. However, the drains are yet to complete its plan.
RMC feels that the task of covering drain would be completed just in time. Just a day ago, RMC Public Relation Officer Naresh Kumar Sinha claimed that the task was on at warfooting level to cover the drains and 125 labourers will be hired from October 10 to 15 for timely completion of the task before Durga Puja. But it seems to be a distant dream now.

Life hit in Millennium City

CUTTACK: Incessant rains lashing the city since last evening have affected normal life in the Millennium City. The city recorded over 60- mm rainfall in the past 24 hours and the weatherman has forecast more rain as the depression moves along the Orissa coast. The rains have kept the civic authorities on their toes.

Even though the city is spared of the problems of water-logging and inundation, the memories of the August 4, 2007, deluge and its aftermath are yet to be erased. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) is on the job with special teams visiting the low-lying areas and a control room being set up to monitor the situation on a constant basis.

As many as 130 water pumps have been pressed into service to drain the rainwater from the vulnerable zones.

The downpour and windy conditions brought the normal life in the city to a standstill through the day. Roads witnessed thin traffic and business activities were affected. With offices being closed on account of Mahalaya, people preferred to remain indoors.

The people in the low-lying areas like Patapol, Sutahat, Badambadi, Rajabagicha Labour Colony, Kesharpur and Gamadiha were a happy lot as their fears of the usual water-logging and inundation did not come true.

CMC Commissioner RN Nanda attributed the improvement to the recent completion of silting and clearance of the Main Storm Water Channels and the network of branch drains.

That the Mahanadi and the Kathajodi rivers are dry came as a boon as they allowed keeping the sluice gates open for discharge of the rainwater. “We are, however, keeping a watch and quick response teams have been formed to deal with any emerging situation,” he said.

‘Drainage work for development'

Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: Karimnagar Congress leaders said that the people of the town should bear the brunt of the ambitious underground drainage works, which had caused damages to all the roads, as it was aimed for the development of the town.

“We are trying to chisel out a beautiful portrait of the town. Initially, we should undergo some problems and once the picture is complete, Karimnagar will look on par with any other metro,” they claimed.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, Karimnagar agricultural market committee chairman Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy, town Congress president Kanne Krishna, town Mahila Congress president Gugilla Jayashree, Karimnagar urban bank chairman Karra Rajashekhar, national film censor board member Venkat Ramana and others have said that the completion of underground drainage works would naturally transform the town on all fronts.

Alleging that the TRS town unit leaders were staging a “drama” by organising 48-hour dharna programme for political gains, they flayed the TRS leaders for making allegations against Ministers D. Sridhar Babu, J. Krishna Rao and MP Ponnam Prabhakar for not taking up any developmental works in the town. When queried about the poor quality about underground drainage works in an unscientific manner and an open public debate by the TRS leaders, they evaded a direct reply and said that they were ready for a debate in Huzurabad Assembly segment represented by TRS legislator Etala Rajender and expose the poor development works in the segment.

The Congress leaders alleged that TRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao had never strived for the development of Karimnagar Parliament constituency during his tenure as MP. They alleged that the TRS was known for elections and collections and neglect of the public issues. They said that the Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar was striving for the allocation of more funds for the development of the town.
