2010 games projects

While NDMC will complete facade restoration work of all the blocks in CP, it has decided to stop work on the Middle Circle that remains completely dug up. Prem Nath Pandey
New Delhi:  Claims of the state administration and civic bodies notwithstanding, several prominent Commonwealth Games projects lag behind schedule and are likely to miss their deadlines. Newsline takes a look.

1. Connaught place
Developer: New Delhi Municipal Council

While NDMC will complete facade restoration work of all the blocks in CP, it has decided to stop work on the Middle Circle that remains completely dug up. It will be taken up and completed after the Games. Other work like underground service ducts, centralised air-conditioning system and construction of underground parking spaces will also be taken up after the Games.

2. Elevated Road on Barapullah Nallah
Developer: Public Works Department

The project, which will provide non-stop connectivity between the Ring Road near Sarai Kale Khan and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to over 10,000 players during the Games, missed its June 2009 deadline. The deadline was renewed to May 2010 and extended till mid-August. Work on two junctions on the corridor is yet to begin.

3. Rani Jhansi Road Grade separator
Developer: Municipal Corporation of Delhi

It took the MCD over 10 years to finally start work on the 1.7-km grade separator in September 2009. The civic agency says only a section of it will be ready for the Games, citing disputes over acquisition of land between various government authorities. The four-lane grade separator, to cost Rs 177 crore, will begin at Filmistan Cinema and extend till St Stephen’s Hospital, thus reducing the traffic chaos on the stretch.

4. Akshardham Flyover
Developer: Delhi Development Authority

The Akshardham Setu that will make NH-24 signal free was one of the first Games projects that succumbed to poor planning and delays. With an initial deadline of June 2009, the project will not see the light of the day before Games. The delay, officials say, was caused due to the late handing over of the land along the UP Link Road by the UP government. The DDA had also planned three cloverleaf flyovers and three slip roads to integrate them with the existing flyover.

5. U P Link road
Developer: Public Works Department

Once complete, the road will provide signal-free connectivity from the Games Village till Noida. With an initial deadline of June 2009, work on the Rs 334-crore project began only late last year. The new deadline was May 2010. Officials blamed the delay on the “tussle between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh governments over the 21-acre land used for the project”.

City's tallest flyover to come up in Chembur

MUMBAI: Work has started on what will become the city's tallest flyover at 65 feet. Estimated to cost Rs 160 crore, the ambitious structure being constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in Chembur is part of the Eastern Freeway.

According to MMRDA officials, the bridge will be built over the Mahim-Kurla Metro line, which in turn is being planned above the existing Ramakrishna Chemburkar Road. "When the entire project is ready, it will be a three-tiered visual treat. The flyover will be four-laned and ready in a year's time," said a senior MMRDA official.

"The state-of-the-art technology will be used to build the flyover which will also play a crucial role in easing the area's traffic congestion," MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said.

Among the several projects being planned in Mumbai to improve the city's infrastructure, the Eastern Freeway—to start from P D'Mello Road in south Mumbai and end in Ghatkopar via the Mumbai Port Trust—will also include a twin-tube tunnel being constructed at the BARC hill.

GHMC to buy new tricycles for garbage collection

Special Correspondent

Close to 400 tricycles, each costing little over Rs. 8,000, will be procured

The new tricycles will be issued only after ensuring they are given to the right persons

HYDERABAD: There is hope as yet for several residential colonies to get replacement for worn-out tricycles used for door-to-door garbage collection.

Despite the Ramky deal for an Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Development Project, GHMC has initiated steps to buy news ones at least for the core city.

Close to 400 tricycles each costing little more than Rs. 8,000 are to be procured to phase out dilapidated vehicles in the erstwhile MCH area, said Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) S. Aleem Basha said.

There are about 7,000 tricycles in the twin cities including the suburbs being used for door-to-door collection and at least 2,000 need to be replaced as many were given more than five years ago. For some reason or other, the civic body had stopped procuring the tricycles despite heavy demand and the matter was also raised in the recent council meeting.

Ramky deal

With the Ramky deal, there is general reluctance to go for any new vehicle as the entire transport fleet is to be handed over to the private agency in phases.

But, exception is being made to tricycles considering it will take at least two years for the agreement to be implemented in full, explained Mr. Basha.

However, the new tricycles are to be issued only after ensuring they are given to the right persons, proper maintenance besides, ascertaining the number of households covered each one.

The change in the policy is because tricycles were issued pretty liberally to propagate the door-to-door collection in the beginning and there was no proper record on the usage and efficacy of the system, he pointed out.
