Pune:  Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade on Thursday expressed concern over the linking of sewage and storm water drainage line. He has directed his staff to immediately identify the connecting point and separate it.

“A visit to various parts of the city after heavy rain revealed that sewage waste was coming out from overflowing storm water drains. This is a very serious situation as there is no reason the sewage line should be connected to storm water drains,” he said.

It is obvious the sewage waste would mix with rainwater and ooze out if the two pipelines are connected, Zagade said, adding, “This can be a potential health hazard for citizens. Thus, all such connecting points would be identified and separated as soon as possible.” The number of slums coming up on nullah are also on the rise posing a threat to life of many, he said. All the ward officers and zonal commissioners have been asked to identify slums that are in high risk area so that efforts will be taken to shift them, Zagade said.

The municipal commissioner has also directed the water supply department to ensure there no opening at the pumping station.
