‘State has given approval for Upper Bhadra Project implementation'

Shimoga MP offers bagina at the Bhadra reservoir

SHIMOGA: The State Government has given its approval to implement the much-awaited Upper Bhadra Project at a cost of Rs. 5,985 crore, B.Y. Raghavendra, Shimoga MP, has said.

Addressing presspersons here after offering bagina at the Bhadra reservoir, about 30 km from here, he said that the Bhadra command area covered Chitradurga, Tumkur, Chikmagalur and Kolar districts.

He said of the fund approved for the project, Rs. 3,388 crore would be spent on the irrigation project and Rs. 2,597 crore on drinking water projects in these districts.

Mr. Raghavendra said that Rs. 274 crore would be spent on a tunnel on the 6.9-km stretch canal between the Bhadra dam and Ajjampura in Chikmagalur district. He said that the tender process for this project had been initiated.

The MP urged farmers of the Bhadra command area to use water judiciously.

Chairman of the Bhadra Command Area Development Authority (CADA) K. Shekharappa said that CADA had sent a proposal to the State Government seeking Rs. 25 crore for development works.

He said that there was a need to set up a divisional office of CADA for better management.

President of the zilla panchayat H.C. Basavarajappa, administrative officer of CADA Annaiah, former president of the Shimoga City Municipal Council president N.J. Rajashekhar, B.P. Shivakumar and Shivaji Rao Shindhe were present.
