Mumbai:  Parts of 30 residential units in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) layout land at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, close to Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri west, were demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Tuesday. The one-floor structures were built for housing the lower income group but residents had illegally constructed up to two additional floors.

The area has 2,937 such structures across 98 plots. Assistant municipal commissioner of K West ward office, Ramesh Pawar, said the demolition was carried out with the help of 50 workers, 15 engineers and 15 policemen. “A non governmental organisation, Disha, had filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court against the illegal additional floors. The court ruled that these floors be demolished. No families were displaced as the legal ground floor was untouched. The demolition was halted for two hours because there was opposition from many residents,” said Pawar. The BMC will soon carry out massive demolition drives in Adarsh Nagar and Laxmi Industrial Estate in Andheri west. As many as 4,000 illegal structures will be demolished.
