Kozhikode corporation's building to get a makeover

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode corporation is planning to convert the old corporation office building as a heritage museum that will showcase the history of the corporation and the surrounding areas.

The civic body is in the process of materializing the plan before the end of the current financial year.

A discussion will be held with the experts in the heritage sector and the government department involved in the preservation of such structures for the materialisation of the project.

The idea on the sort of heritage museum that will be set up is expected to be derived from the meeting to be held with experts in the field soon.

The civic body under its proposal to conserve the building as heritage structure

plans to set up a library for documentation of the history of the civic body. It has already started renovation work to preserve it as a heritage structure.

The renovation work worth around Rs 50 lakh was carried out on the more than a century-old structure which was in dire need of repair works.

The work comprising flooring, repair of car parking and toilets, roofing, painting had been carried out under the renovation work.

Deputy mayor P T Abdul Latheef said that the civic body plans to convert the old corporation office building into a heritage structure-cum-museum.

'"We have plans of setting up of a heritage museum that will provide authentic information about the bygone era to the public, students and researchers. A decision on items to be displayed inside the heritage museum will be made only after holding discussion with persons who are experts in the field as well as those who are willing to make contributions to materialize our dream,'' he said.

"We are planning to make the museum a reality in the golden jubilee year,'' he said.

M T Padma opposition leader said that the suggestion to set up the heritage museum was raised during a discussion held recently.

"It's a good move as the building which is constructed on the basis of old architecture style will remain as a historical monument in the years to come,'' said the opposition leader.
