Civic body bags award for energy conservation

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has won the second prize in national energy conservation awards for the year for its efforts on energy conservation through use of advance technology for streetlights.

“The civic body had initiated the energy saving efforts in 2000 and was able to save 114.86 lakh units, which amount to Rs 5.25 crore annually. The efforts to save energy will be continued” Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade said.

There are around 1.5 lakh streetlights in the city with an average annual increase of 5,000. Nearly 25,000 streetlights have energy saving equipments installed, said PMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner Vijay Dahibhate. Meanwhile, the civic body is also exploring the possibility of use of LED lights that have larger life.
