NDMC has beautiful designs for new FOB

NEW DELHI: A foot-overbridge (FOB) need not be just a steel-and-iron structure. At least, New Delhi Municipal Council believes it. The civic body is constructing a foot-overbridge (FOB) at Africa Avenue that will not only provide relief to pedestrians but with its unique and eye-catching design will also add to the aesthetics of the area.

Besides the FOB at Africa Avenue, the civic body is also constructing two regular FOBs in the city. All three FOBs are expected to be completed by June 2010.

"The FOB at Africa Avenue will be first-of-its-kind in the city. Work has already begun and the cost of the project will be Rs 4 crore. The FOB will have escalators and stairs. We had no space constraint at Africa Avenue which is why we could experiment and try something different there.''

These foot-overbridges have been designed to ensure smooth pedestrian movement. Said an NDMC official: "We hope that pedestrians would be encouraged to make use of FOBs to cross the road as they have been fitted with escalators. The three FOBs being constructed by us will be ready before the Games. We have carried out a proper assessment of pedestrian requirement and we hope this FOB will serve people adequately.''

The FOB at the Mother Teresa Crescent will have a regular design and will cost around Rs 3.5 crore. Said an NDMC official: "Work has begun on all three FOBs. The FOB at Mother Teresa Crescent will be fitted with escalators while the FOB at Park Street will have lifts.''

NDMC had given a nod for construction of foot overbridges, underpasses and subways in its area which will approximately cost Rs 75 crore. The approval was granted at a meeting of the Council held in January. Delhi Integrated Multi-Model transit System was roped in as the consultant for the project.

As per the project, three FOBs would be constructed at Africa Avenue, Mother Teresa Crescent and Park Street. Two subways would be constructed at Mandir Marg and Shahjahan Road while two underpasses would be built at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Shantipath, which would only be constructed after the Games. While Shantipath has not got traffic clearances BKS cannot be taken up as a lot of work is ongoing there.

Said an NDMC official: "The consultant for the project had carried out a detailed survey at all seven proposed locations to decide which type of grade separator would be suited at these locations.''
