Panchkula: The artificial lake will come up in 22 acres

The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has proposed to construct an artificial lake in an area of around 22 acres in Sector 24.

This will be the second artificial lake in Panckula — one lake will be created after the Kaushalya dam starts functioning.

For the Sector-24 lake, an estimate of Rs 15 crore has been sent to the Haryana government for approval. HUDA officials said talks are being held with experts of the Roorkee Irrigation department.

A few days ago, a special team from the Roorkee Irrigation department visited the site to check if a lake was sustainable in the area. Subsequently, the proposal to construct the lake was finalised, an official said.

“As there were hardly any recreational facilities for Panchkula residents, we mooted the proposal for construction of this artificial lake in Sector 24,” a senior HUDA official said. “Interestingly, another artificial lake will be created near the Kaushalya dam, which is likely to be ready by this December.” The Kaushalya dam is around eight kilometre from Panchkula.

The official added: “The lake will be created in an area of around 22 acres with recreational facilities around it. It will be fed by Ghaggar’s tributaries Nada and Nadana. Once the construction work starts, the lake will be ready within a year.”

Panchkula residents welcome the development. “When it comes to recreational facilities, Panchkula residents have to look towards Chandigarh. The new lake will provide a much-needed recreational spot to residents,” Mohit Verma, a resident of Sector 25, said.
