More buildings razed as MCD continues drive

Intensifying its operations against illegal structures across the city, the MCD demolished unauthorised portions of 42 buildings and sealed 15 other properties on Thursday. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) sealing and demolition squads continued their drive in Shahdara South Zone for the second day on Thursday. MCD officials sealed 14 illegal properties in Laxmi Nagar and Ramesh Park, while demolition action was taken against 18 properties in Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar and Preet Vihar areas.

"We will continue to take action against all those structures, where owners have illegally constructed fourth or fifth floor. Also, buildings that stand taller than 15 metres will be demolished," said a senior MCD official. On Wednesday, the civic body had sealed 19 properties and demolished an equal number of buildings in Lalita Park and nearby areas, sparking violence in the locality.

The civic body has swooped into action with renewed vigour to stop unauthorised constructions after a multi-storeyed building with two illegal floors collapsed in Lalita Park on November 15, triggering criticism against the MCD for failing to check the growth of illegal buildings in the Capital.

Officials said the civic agency on Thursday, also carried out demolition of unauthorised portions of 16 buildings in Najafgarh Zone, including areas like Nangloi Jat, Mundka Sadh Nagar, Mahavir Enclave, New Roshanpura, Vaishali Colony, Rajapuri, Samalka and West Sagarpur.

In Civil Lines Zone, too, unauthorised portions of eight properties were demolished on Thursday, while one building was sealed, officials added.

The areas where action was taken included Vijay Nagar, Sabzi Mandi, Hudson Lane, Kashmiri Gate and Majlis Park. In this zone alone, 39 properties were sealed in the past week.

MCD razes 42 unauthorized buildings

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) continued its demolition drive in the city, taking action against 42 unauthorized buildings. It also sealed 15 other properties.

''Approximately 18 properties were demolished in Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar and Preet Vihar where unauthorized construction was being carried out and sealing action was taken against 14 properties in Laxmi Nagar, '' said an official.

A sealing drive at Lalita Park on Wednesday had sparked violence in the locality with some buildings owners allegedly manhandling the councillor and blocking traffic at the busy Vikas Marg. MCD officials still managed sealing portions of 19 buildings in Lalita Park, which were above the permissible limit of 15 metres and demolished 19 buildings in east Delhi where ongoing illegal construction was detected.

In the past three weeks, MCD has demolished and sealed a large number of properties after the building collapse in Lalita Park on November 15. Illegal construction in this area has specially been in focus due to this.

Besides Shahdara (south) zone, MCD's Najafgarh zone also carried out widespread demolition on Thursday in areas like Mundka, Vishwas park, Rajapuri , Mahavir Enclave, Vaishali Colony, Rajapuri, Samalka and West Sagarpur, etc. '' Illegally built floors, rooms and basements were targeted during our demolition drive on Thursday. Action was taken against 16 properties,'' said an official.

New Delhi:  The MCD crackdown on illegal constructions — spurred by the Lalita Park collapse last month — continued on Thursday, with the civic agency demolishing 34 properties in Najafgarh and Shahdara (South) Zone and sealing 14 others across Laxmi Nagar and Ramesh Park.

In the Najafgarh area, buildings were pulled down at Mundka, Sadh Nagar, Manglapuri and Vaishali Colony. They had been built without approved building plans, MCD officials said.

In Shahdara (South) Zone, the MCD sealed 14 properties in Laxmi Nagar and Ramesh Park, and demolished 18 properties in Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar and Preet Vihar. The drive had begun in Wednesday, with 19 buildings being sealed.

The MCD conducted a survey of the area to check for more illegally constructed buildings. On Tuesday, it sent notices to 638 houses for illegal construction, following which it started sealing them. Floors that extend beyond the 15-metre height limit in buildings were targeted.

Officials said in the Civil Lines Zone in North Delhi, unauthorised portions of eight properties were demolished since Wednesday, while a building was sealed. Areas targeted by the drive included Vijay Nagar, Sabzi Mandi, Hudson Lanes, Kashmere Gate and Majlis Park.

As many as 39 properties were sealed in this zone alone over the last one week. “The builder mafia has constructed many properties illegally. We have been taking action against them over the past week, and will continue to do so in the coming days also,” an official said.
