MCD razes six properties in north Delhi

Continuing its war against illegal construction for the second consecutive day, the MCD on Wednesday carried out its demolition drive against unauthorised construction by local builders in north Delhi. The building department of the Civil Lines zone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) demolished six properties across Old Subzi Mandi, Rana Pratap Bagh, Gujaranwala Town and Adarsh Nagar.

"The drive lends a fresh perspective against unauthorised construction activities as the department, through these stringent demolition actions, has sent a widespread message amongst the people indulging in illegal construction besides unscrupulous builders to respect laws while undertaking construction work," said a senior MCD official.

Earlier on Tuesday, initiating a crack down aimed at erring builders who swindle innocent people's money with properties constructed illegally, the MCD had demolished nine properties in and around Mukherjee Nagar area in north Delhi.

While in some places floors constructed in illegal manner were razed to the ground, entire buildings were brought down at other places by MCD personnel. As per the provisions of the Master Plan 2021, building plans for construction up to only third floor are allowed.

Last week, the department had demolished 16 illegal structures. Similar drive will continue in the coming days wherein illegal properties of builders will be targeted, MCD officials said.

'Notify buildings to avoid trouble to people'

BANGALORE: Minister for Home and Transport R Ashok on Wednesday advised officials of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to take necessary precautions to ensure that the buildings were notified while acquiring land for developmental purposes in the future.

At a function organised to distribute alternative sites to 2,000 people, who lost their sites due to various reasons, Ashok said: "Many people would have invested their lifetime's savings to construct houses and if they are demolished in the name of acquisition, their lives would be shattered."

He said nearly 1,300 of the 2,000 people who were getting alternate sites were revenue site holders. "The rest are getting the sites on the directions of the courts or because they lost them for developmental purposes," he said. "Therefore, the authorities should ensure that the buildings in which people are living are notified at the time of acquisition."

Developing lakes

Ashok said the BDA would undertake construction of a 65kmstretch of Peripheral Ring Road at the cost of `5,000 crore and that the government was determined to rejuvenate all the lakes in and around the city.

He said the state government has so far given 16,000 title deeds to the slumdwellers and is in the process of giving 10,000 more title deeds within a month. "I held discussions with the chief minister and the farmers," Ashok said. "I am sure the chief minister will agree on reasonable compensation for land owners who will lose their lands for Arkavathy layout." He said the BDA will not undertake any work at the layout till the issue was settled.

Slumfree

IT and BT Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said, "As the Central government was giving aid only to those slumdwellers who have title deeds, we are focusing on giving title deeds to slum dwellers."

He said according to an estimate, there were 3,390 slums in the state and some were in private lands.

"We are contemplating on either shifting the slums that are on the private lands to the buildings constructed on government lands or giving TDRs to the private land owners in return for the land," he said. "We are also contemplating constructing fourstoried buildings in the slums that are situated on the private lands and giving a share in the buildings to the land owners in return."

He said the state government will construct 40,000 houses for the slumdwellers at the cost of `2,000 crore with aid from JnNURM.

The state government is constructing some more houses under the Rajiv Awaz Yojana and is contributing `1,000 crore for the same. "Around 45 lakh people are living in slums and our aim is to ensure they get their own houses," said Katta.

Truckers strike

Speaking on the sidelines of the function, Ashoka said the truckers were going on a strike against the Central government's policy though the Centre has responded positively to their demands.

"I advise the truckers not to cause inconvenience to the people by going on strike frequently as they have gone on strike four times this year."

All Smiles:Recipients of site allotment letters at a function in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Bangalore: It was a dream come true for Zakira Begum, a lecturer, when the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) announced that owners of revenue land that has been acquired for layout formation will get alternative sites soon.

“But I did not know it could be so soon. My dream has been fulfilled. I had lost all hopes of owning a house in Bangalore after my site in J.P. Nagar was acquired by the BDA in 2002,” she told The Hindu on the sidelines of a programme organised by BDA to distribute alternative site allotment letters to revenue land losers.

She is one of the 2,000 allottees who have been identified by the BDA for alternative sites. Home and Transport Minister R. Ashok and Housing Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu formally handed over letters to 25 allottees on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ashok advised BDA officials not to notify land and acquire it for layout formation if people had built houses on the land. “Please do not go by seeing the land records. Go to the area and see for yourself if people are residing there,” he said.

Arkavathy Layout

With regard to land acquisition problems pertaining to Arkavathy layout, Mr. Ashok said the issue would be settled amicably after holding talks with farmers and site allottees.

Farmers of villages where land has been acquired for the layout are up in arms against the BDA. They have been on a protest for the last one week demanding 50 per cent of developed land for every acre they lose. The Chief Minister on Tuesday promised farmers' leaders that he would soon meet them to resolve the mess.

Mr. Ashok said the BJP Government was not responsible for the mess as the land was acquired in the past.

Truckers' strike

Expressing dissatisfaction against the truckers' strike, the Minister said: “This is nothing but blackmail. They are repeatedly calling for strikes instead of getting their problems resolved amicably.”

He said that the truckers have the impression that the government would succumb if they inconvenience the public.

He offered to hold talks with the Union Transport Ministry during his visit to Delhi on December 5.

BDA Commissioner Bharatlal Meena said 700 of the 2,000 allottees were given alternative sites following a court order. The rest were identified by the BDA as losers of revenues sites, he said.

While 25 of them were given the letters on Wednesday, others would have to collect it from the BDA office, he added.
