Help demolish illegal religious centres: DC

Mangalore, Nov 3, DH News Service:

The public must extend a complete support for the implementation of Supreme Court’s order to demolish unauthorised religious constructions in the district for public good, requested Deputy Commissioner Sobodh Yadav.

Addressing the Income tax officers meeting at Deputy Commissioner’s office hall on Wednesday, he insisted on gaining public confidence to accomplish any works.
“The officers must priorly inform public about the works to be done in favour of the people so that it decreases complications to the maximum extent,” he said.

He then clearly directed the officers to vacate those religious structures which exist on the main road in the first phase.

He said that it is easy to function as per the Supreme Court’s order if a public opinion is formed to support the cause. Such a situation has been already formed in Dakshina Kannada which would make the work more easy, he stated and asked the taluk and divisional officers to hold meetings with religious organisations with a view to convince them.

If the people are convinced about the fact of demolishing religious institutions for the benefit of public, then surely the people will come forward to support the cause.
If necessary we can in fact help people to demolish the constructions following the footsteps of Chikballapur, he assisted.

He directed the departments to shoulder the responsibility of demolishing after the completion of initial process like sending notices and assured that district administration will extend full support for the cause. Additional DC, Assistant Commissioners of Mangalore and Puttur and Tahsildars provided the additional information.

Complete pending works

After observing the hampered works under SFC, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav directed the officers of the local administration to complete all the pending works at the earliest.

He was addressing the local administration of the district including Town Municipal, Town Panchayat Executive Officers, Community Affairs Officer and junior engineers, about the review meeting of various developmental works in the district. Deputy Commissioner noticed that despite the identification of lands for scientific waste disposal by the local bodies, the attempt of implementing scientific waste disposal method has been failed. Therefore he directed the officers to catch up quick progress in the implementation of scheme by bringing awareness among the people about waste management.

He instructed the Executive Officer to take action in order to vacate unauthorised shops situated at the road sides.

The Town Municipal Executive Officer informed for the recovery of tax up to 75 per cent as far as self claimed property tax is concerned. It was directed in the meeting to disconnect the water connection of those who don’t pay water bills on time.

One more demolition drive

Rahul Belagali, Chikkaballapur, Nov 3, DH News Service:

Close on the heels of the demolition of the Sunkalamma temple near Bagepalli, the district administration is getting ready for another round of demolition drive in view of the Supreme Court order to clear places of worship built illegally in parks, on roadside and other places.

The district administration has identified 550 illegal places of worship during survey conducted in different taluks in the district.

Of them, 175 are in Chikkaballapur taluk, including 56 in Chikkaballapur City Municipal Council limits. The list includes temples, mosques and churches. Most of the centres were built by the roadside in different layouts in the city.

The Chikkaballapur CMC has already prepared a list of these religious centres. It has also mentioned that the buildings were constructed prior to December 7, 2009.

Off the road

The report has noted that most of these centres have come up close to the roads. Cases are also pending before courts on some of the structures. Two places of worship have been built in the parks.

Also, most of the illegal structure are Ashwatthakattes, built with stones and bricks. Only few are built with cement and granite blocks.

The CMC has conducted a comprehensive survey of these centres and collected information regarding the place and the total area occupied by them. The authorities have also mentioned schedules for the disputed places of worships.

Time limit

The Chikkaballapur district administration took necessary steps regarding the matter on October 31, based on the information provided by the CMC. It has given a week's notice to the religious leaders to shift the disputed structures.

They could file objections to the Municipal Commissioner with records if the structures were genuine and built with proper records and necessary permission.

Chikkaballapur Additional Deputy Commissioner G S Nayak told Deccan Herald that if there was no objection, the district administration would go ahead with the demolition as per the orders of Supreme Court.

Inspection before work

He added that the religious centres and the surrounding area would be inspected before taking up the demolition work.

Nayak promised that the demolition would be carried out only after following all the necessary procedures.

Threat looms large

Balamuri Ganapati Temple on Sante Market Road, Anjaneyaswamy Temple near Vapasandra and Chamarajpet, Ranganathaswamy Temple near Milk Dairy, Anjaneya Temple, and Ganapati Temple near M G Road, Yogi Shanishwara Temple on M G Road, Mallamma Temple on Kandavara Nandi Road and the mosque in Municipal Layout have been marked in the city for demolition.

In addition, several Ashwatthakattes and Anjaneyaswamy Temples have been identified in Chikkaballapur city.

The statue of Sir M Visvesvaraya on Bazaar Road will be shifted to a new location.

No case filed on bridge collapse

Hyderabad, Oct. 31: Highlighting lax supervision by the municipal corporation, a footbridge collapsed while it was being constructed near Road No. 1 at Film Nagar in Jubilee Hills here on Sunday.

No one was injured in the incident as vehicular traffic had been diverted on the busy road for the construction of the footbridge. The GHMC failed to monitor the footbridge construction activity after awarding the contract to a private agency, Swetha Agency.

The municipal officials did not even book a case with the police over the incident. The Jubilee Hills inspector, Mr K. Narsing Rao, said no complaint has been lodged with the police. “We were informed that the overhead steel frame of the footbridge collapsed and that no one was injured,” he said.

The GHMC additional commissioner (traffic and transport), Mr Subba Rao, told this correspondent that Swetha Agency did not inform the GHMC about its plans to instal the steel frame on Sunday. “We will take appropriate action against the agency but our first priority is to clear the road by lifting the steel frame, Mr Rao said.

The incident occured in the afternoon when the steel frame of the footbridge was being installed with the help of two cranes. The frame was to be installed on the supporting structure built on either side of the road near Telugu film actor Mohan Babu’s residence in Film Nagar. The steel frame tilted during installation, lifting up one of the cranes and came crashing down.

The GHMC commissioner, Mr Sameer Sharma, said “the crane could not take the weight of steel frame after its tilted. It is not a case of footbridge collapse.”
