Ahmedabad:  The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has formed two teams, which will survey around 300 old and dilapidated houses in the Walled City in the next three days.

It has issued notices to owners/occupants of 11 such houses that the civic body plans to pull down in the coming five days, Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam said on Tuesday.

Civic body sources claimed that they have already identified 64 houses that are dangerous to live in, but the owners did not pay attention to their notices. The fresh flurry of action comes after Chief Minister Narendra Modi took interest in the matter following heavy rains, which led to collapse of buildings and walls.

Sources said AMC had offered assistance to repair heritage houses and arrange partial financial help from HIDCO. But the scheme got poor response from occupants.

Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Management department has moved 2,628 tonnes of garbage with the help of 532 vehicles, that made 896 trips to dumping sites following the heavy rains in the city. Over 520 sanitary supervisors ensured the removal of garbage by 10,000 safai karmacharis, who were on round-the-clock duty, said Gautam, adding that the malaria control staff have covered 14,273 houses with 149 fogging machines.

HUDA left homeless, vehicles attached

PANCHKULA: The state's chief provider of houses turned homeless on Tuesday when a local court directed the auction of Haryana Urban Development Authority headquarters in Panchkula along with three showrooms in Sector 8. Besides this, the court also directed that the authority's fixed deposits in nine banks be frozen and 17 cars attached.

Additional district and sessions judge Ritu Garg fixed September 10 for 'munadi' (public announcement) and September 17 for sale of these properties. The court ordered the auction of HUDA office and other properties on the petition filed by Des Raj, Jagpal and others of Chowki village in Panchkula, whose land was acquired by the authority for development of sectors.

The petitioner's counsel said HUDA had acquired the land belonging to farmers of Chowki for developing residential sectors, but did compensate them. In June 1998, HUDA acquired land under Section 4 of Land Acquisition Compensation Act, 1894.

On March 10, 2009, additional district and sessions judge of Panchkula had fixed the compensation rate at Rs 3,000 per square yard on the basis of market value. The petitioners had maintained that against the acquisition, HUDA had to pay around Rs 25 crore to the farmers of Chowki.

They further alleged HUDA did not bother and failed to pay the majority of relief. Miffed over this, the petitioners moved court again for execution of earlier orders.

Recently, HUDA officers had assured the court of making the payment. However, with no action still being taken, the additional district and sessions judge finally passed Tuesday's orders.
