DDA plans to increase built-up area of banquet halls

NEW DELHI: As the marriage season gets underway in the city, Delhi Development Authority is planning to increase the built-up area of banquet halls (baraat ghars) along the lines of guidelines laid out in the Master Plan of Delhi 2021.

Sources in DDA confirmed that demand for more such halls had been coming in for some years now. "The pressure is not only from the public but also the nominated elected representatives in the Authority,'' admitted a senior official. The fact that MPD2021 has already allowed the ramping up of community halls and other social infrastructure, makes the move simpler for DDA.

According to the guidelines laid out in the MPD2021, for every 1 lakh residential population, civic agencies are allowed to build a multipurpose community hall of 2,000 sqm. In the case of a banquet hall, this becomes a plot area of 800-2,000 sqm for a population of 10,000.

There are not enough banquet halls available in the city and the waiting list for these halls and community centres has been increasing steadily.

Incidentally, the maximum built up area or covered area for these halls was a modest 260 sqm before the Masterplan. As per the new regulations, the built up area on a plot of 2,000 sqm, which is allowed a coverage of 30%, works out to 600 sqm, considerably larger than the earlier 260 sqm which was 33% of the plot area of 800 sqm, said the official.

According to the new proposal, banquet halls can now be three storeys high. This would enable the maximum utilisation of available space, said DDA officials. The land agency has recommended the same in the redevelopment norms that was passed by the Authority last month and which has gone for final approval to the urban development ministry. This redevelopment is to be applicable to both planned and unplanned areas.

Water harvesting scheme to benefit farmers

Water harvesting scheme to benefit farmers

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government’s ambitious farm pond digging plan of one lakh units per year might provide a solace to people in the wake of series of suicides by farmers, but with adequate measures to harvest rain water, farmers as well as the entire rural community would benefit more.

With major rivers in Orissa flowing in the west-east direction, most of the rain water goes directly to the sea whereas there is a huge water scarcity at the upstream. On the other hand, with 40 per cent pore space in the soil we can help it absorb the runoff water by delaying the drainage process through adoption of various rain water harvesting techniques so that the ground water table can also be maintained properly, said soil scientist and Chairman of Western Orissa Development Council (WODC), Prof. Niranjan Panda.

Mentioning the plights of the farmers of western Orissa districts in particular, the expert on the sidelines of the ongoing international symposium on use of potassium at OUAT said, the rainwater harvesting mechanism can contribute more for western Orissa farmers than the Hirakud reservoir.

Calling for village-based planning for water harvesting, Prof. Panda said while the activities will help in generating more employment opportunity for the people, the village committees can also decide the cropping pattern and farming procedures according to availability of water and other farm inputs.

Saying that a WODC-sponsored water harvesting station is already on job at Pua village under Tarabha block of Sonepur district, he informed that three others i.e. Bharsuja village under Agalpur block of Balangir district, Badmal village under Jujumara block of Sambalpur district and a village in Deogarh district are in the pipeline.

The western Orissa model can also be replicated in other parts of the State so that we can have sufficient ground water for use through lift irrigation points as an irrigation potential, he added.

Overuse of ground water in Haryana and Punjab is now seen as a curse as the region is at serious loss on ground water table. But with timely intervention Orissa can go for rain water harvesting in such a way that the water is used for farming and the ground water is maintained, he added.

Historical Warangal to turn into tourist hub

WARANGAL: The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) has chalked an action plan to develop the historically significant Warangal city into a tourist hub.

Several new projects will soon be taken up on KUDA lands on Build-Operate- Transfer (BOT) basis.

Information regarding the various projects has been put on the website www.kuda.in. Tenders have been invited from private builders and construction companies for taking up the projects and those interested can download the applications from the website and submit them before 25 November.

Earlier, KUDA had plans to construct multiplex theatres, food courts and others in its land but failed. So it changed its strategy.

It has decided to get a family entertainment centre, multi-purpose functioncum- convention hall, budget hotel, super speciality hospital, medical and health care centre, recreation health club with resort, etc. constructed in prime localities of the city through BOT system.

It has also decided to set up an eco-park with water sports, recreation and entertainment complex in five acres at Rangleela Maidan. At the prime Hayagreevachari centre in Hanamkonda, the officials have decided to construct a big building with modern facilities to house various government offices.

Speaking to this paper, KUDA planning officer Ajit Reddy said they have identified the several government departments functioning in rented buildings.

The building at Hayagreevachari centre will be built at a cost of Rs 15 crore, he added.
