APSRTC buses to have GPS facility

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC is going to equip all its buses with the Global Positioning System (GPS) soon.

To begin with, it installed black boxes in five RTC buses on 49 M route on an experimental basis on Friday.

This was disclosed by Gunti Jaya Rao who took charge as the Greater Hyderabad and Hyderabad RTC Zone executive director, at a press conference here on Monday. ''After studying its working for two months in operating buses on time, a final decision will be taken to equip all the RTC buses with the GPS. But one thing is certain, we are planning to install the GPS at least in JNNURM buses,’’ he said.

Rao hoped that the new system would help the RTC which caters to 42 per cent transport needs of people, ensure streamlining the operation of bus services.

Another major initiative is Family CAT Card. The card priced at Rs 300 will be introduced from November 1.

It is valid for one year. Using the card, five members of a family, including spouse, children and dependents can avail themselves of 10 per cent of bus fare concession.

The holders of CAT Cards priced at Rs 140, can get the Family CAT Card on payment of the difference of Rs 160. APSRTC MD B Prasada Rao had already approved the proposal.

The RTC has set a revenue target of Rs 736 crore by operating buses for a total distance of 37 crore km on no loss and no profit basis, he said.
