Chandigarh:  Municipal Corporation is yet to find a way out of the stalemate over the construction of the multi-level parking lot in Sector 17. The construction of the parking lot is yet to start, almost three years after it was approved. The agency that had been allotted the contract for construction had not responded to the repeated letters of the civic body to start construction. A meeting has now been scheduled for next week to discuss the further course of action.

Municipal Corporation was to make the first multilevel parking lot in Sector 17 on Build-Operate-Transfer basis. However, due to the delay in starting of construction, the contractor had demanded that the concession period be increased as the cost of construction has increased from when the project was allotted to now. The demand had been rejected by the Administration. An official said a meeting would be held next week and some solution to the problem would be found. “Efforts are being made that the construction is started at the earliest,” he said. The parking situation in Sector 17 is quite chaotic with a large number of visitors coming to the commercial hub. The construction of the paid parking lot would to an extent provide some relief. Earlier the construction had been delayed due to the clearance for the plans not being received.
