Ball sets rolling for Sec 17 multi-level parking

CHANDIGARH: After a long wait, the ball has finally been set rolling for the construction of the city's first multi-level parking in Sector 17.

Municipal corporation engineering wing on Tuesday opened the financial bids and selected a company for its construction. A local constructor has bagged the Rs 38-crore project, on which work will start in a month. Seven firms had applied for it, of which six qualified for the bidding.

To protect the skyline of the city, floors will not be constructed on the surface of the lot, but beneath it. It will have three basement floors - for four-wheelers -- besides the surface one - for two-wheelers. Covering 3 lakh square feet, with each underground parking of 1 lakh square feet, the lot will be 37 feet below the surface. It will accommodate 950 to 1,000 four-wheelers at a time.

The multi-level parking will be equipped with lifts and state-of-the-art facilities. All floors will have electronic machines and the barricades will open for a vehicle only after a commuter submits the fee. There will be facilities to submit fee through cards.

MC chief engineer S S Bida said, "A company has been selected. Paper work will be completed soon and the construction started in a month." The architectural designs of the building have been approved by the UT architecture wing.
