Rs 3 crore sanctioned for solar signals

BHOPAL: The finance department of the state government has sanctioned around Rs 3 crore for the construction of solar traffic signals. The proposal for solar traffic signals was sent to the planning commission by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), according to an official release.

"BMC has proposed that 17 existing traffic signals should be powered by solar energy," said BMC commissioner Vishesh Garhpale who presented the proposal under the aegis of the principal secretary, finance.

He informed the government and planning commission officials that besides the solar signals, 10 pedestrian request signals would also be constructed for the convenience of commuters and to facilitate the movement of pedestrians on road.

Garhpale proposed the establishment of solar blinkers at 60 junctions in the city. The solar signals will also have a backup energy of four hours to keep functioning till the evening hours and during power cuts.

Collector Nikunj Shirvastava and Garhpale also visited the proposed spots for solar signals.
