NDMC hikes parking rates
Now users will pay double the previous rate.
With the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) approving a hike in parking rates in areas under its jurisdiction, users of surface level parking facilities will have to dole out twice as much starting June.
The Council at its meeting on Wednesday approved a new parking policy which will rationalise the parking system and have increased rates based on the area and the opportunity cost involved.
Now users will have to pay Rs. 20 per hour (previously Rs. 10) and will pay an additional Rs. 20 for each hour subsequently. Effectively, a user will pay Rs. 100 for using the facility for five hours and above. The proposal for hiking parking rates was introduced for discussion in the Council meeting three times previously and was finally approved on Wednesday.
The NDMC’s revised tariff is less than the tariff previously approved by the Delhi Government which had suggested Rs. 30 for the first hour, Rs. 75 up to two hours, Rs. 105 up to four hours and Rs. 135 up to five hours.
Sources said one reason why the civic body has increased the surface level rates is to promote its multilevel parking projects such as the ones in Sarojini Nagar and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. These are not being utilised properly.
The parking rates prevalent in NDMC areas were the 2004 rates which collected Rs. 10 for the first two hours followed by Rs. 10 more for each additional hour. The NDMC has 54 parking lots.
