PCMC to identify plots for parking

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation (PCMC) will develop pay and park lots and multi-level parking at busy places.

Municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi said the civic body will develop them as pilot projects. "The town planning department has been directed to find reserved plots in the development plan (DP) where the parking lots can come up. The department has also been asked to identify large plots for multi-level parking in the city."

The civic chief said a plot admeasuring 6,000 sqft in Chinchwad could be provided to the traffic police department for their office. A civic official from the traffic department said that 20 years ago, there were 30,000 vehicles in the city. Now, the vehicular population has increased to around three lakh. Hence, more parking space was needed, he added.

R R Bhogale, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) for Pimpri Chinchwad, said, "The traffic police have demanded land for offices for six divisional police chowkeys in Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Sangvi, Nigdi, and Hinjewadi. The existing offices are small. The traffic police have also made a demand for provision of land in Kalakhadak area of Wakad under Hinjewadi traffic police."

An official in the town planning department said five locations have been identified for traffic offices. These will be inspected by the municipal commissioner and chief of town planning department and then a final decision will be taken

In February, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had directed civic bodies to provide land for offices of traffic divisions and sub-divisions and sought special drives to remove hawkers and other encroachments causing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
