Sector 17 parking rates likely to be revised

The hourly parking charges proposed to be introduced in Sector 17 are likely to be revised. A proposal for the same has been given by area councillor Pardeep Chhabra after resentment among the shopkeepers to the proposed charges.

The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation had approved parking charges in a meeting held last month.

For four wheelers these parking charges were Rs 5 for the first two hours and Rs 10 for every hour after that. For two-wheelers it was Rs 2 for the first two hours and Rs 4 for every subsequent hour.

The demand is to change it to Rs 5 for the first four hours and Rs 10 for every hour thereafter for four-wheelers.

Similarly for two-wheelers it is proposed that the charges should be Rs 2 for the first four hours.

The traders have been ruing the introduction of the hourly parking charges stating that they were already facing stiff competition from malls and the parking charges would impact the popularity of the commercial complex.

The Municipal Corporation has decided to introduce the system of automated parking in Sector 17. When the equipment is installed, hourly parking charges will be imposed. It is expected that a discussion on the charges will be held and these would be reviewed.
