Municipal corporation mulls options to ease traffic woes

LUDHIANA: After much research, the municipal corporation has come up with two options to decongest the heavy traffic on Jagraon Bridge, which will become even more chaotic when eight laning of the road will begin.

While one suggestion includes construction of an over bridge and trimming of footpath and the central park to accommodate more vehicles, the other one includes widening of the bridge after consultation with the railways.

The final decision will be taken after the feasibility study by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) and executive engineers of the MC in consultation with railways.

Municipal commissioner Rahul Tiwari said, "Traffic congestion at Jagraon Bridge will become a major problem once the eight-laning of the Ferozepur road is completed. We have two suggestions from our consultants IL&FS (Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services) and we have asked the executive engineers and RITES to conduct a feasibility study and present the report in the meeting to be held on November 12. We have to begin the process of eight laning in two months and the matter needs to be sorted out as soon as possible."

"We will also seek suggestions from the public as well," he added.
