Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation will construct a new bus terminal at the Manimajra bus stand. The structure for the terminal has been designed by Punjab Engineering College (PEC) students.

The structure will be made of stainless steel and have a fibreglass roof. Interlock paver blocks will be used for the flooring and benches with granite sitting top will be fixed.

The structure will be built at a cost of Rs 72 lakh, an MC official said. The size of the terminal will be around 130x30 feet. The design for the structure is ready but tenders are yet to be invited.

“The terminal would be the first-of-its-kind in the city. The structure will be of stainless steel to avoid corrosion,” Superintending Engineer (B&R) Mukesh Anand said.

“A large number of buses ply to and from this bus stand. There was a need to have a better structure for residents. The present terminal does not have adequate facilities,” area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kalaa said. “Once the construction is complete, the residents will have a modern facility in the area.”

ayor Anu Chatrath said efforts were being made to started work at the earliest.

Earlier, the proposal was opposed in the House meeting, as the agenda had mistakenly stated that a “bus queue shelter” is to be constructed.
