Drive against illegal parking postponed

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has postponed its drive against unauthorised parking by a day. The drive was scheduled to take place from Thursday.

The civic body had announced it would lift vehicles parked on streets, crowded areas and other places not meant for parking. It would charge the expenses for lifting from the vehicle owners. Shramsafalya Services was awarded the contract to conduct this drive.

Officials did not state any reason for postponement. They said that a notice had been issued about the drive to make people aware and the locations where it would be conducted.

On a day's delay, he did not give any particular reason but said that because of the notice at least people became aware of the drive and would not park their vehicles in places that we have mentioned.

"We have asked the traffic department to assist us. They will be giving some employees. We have not specified any number to them.

The NMC has two cranes with the help of which the vehicles will be lifted. The contractor will deploy staff for the job as per requirement. Two NMC employees will also be there," said deputy municipal commissioner (anti-encroachment), Dattatreya Gotise.

Meanwhile, the Nashik Transport Association has sought an extension as they needed time to discuss the drive with truck drivers. They submitted a memorandum to the NMC. They also demanded that all facilities be provided at the Adgaon truck terminus and new truck terminuses be created at Vilholi, Pune Naka and other octroi nakas. They said they would cooperate only after NMC provides these facilities. The NMC, however, said the drive would be conducted as planned.

"The drive is for all illegally parked vehicles. We cannot wait till the facilities are created. There are truck terminuses at Vilholi and Adgaon Naka," said Gotise.

An official said that they had just informed the traffic department and that by Friday afternoon the drive would be started.

Action will be taken on people who park heavy vehicles, medium size vehicles including cars, two and three wheelers on service roads, footpaths and no-parking zones. The contractor will be lifting such vehicles and the expense incurred in doing so will be charged from the owner of the vehicle.

The drive is to ensure smooth flow of traffic and prevention of small and big accidents due to illegal parking.

PCMC to identify plots for parking

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation (PCMC) will develop pay and park lots and multi-level parking at busy places.

Municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi said the civic body will develop them as pilot projects. "The town planning department has been directed to find reserved plots in the development plan (DP) where the parking lots can come up. The department has also been asked to identify large plots for multi-level parking in the city."

The civic chief said a plot admeasuring 6,000 sqft in Chinchwad could be provided to the traffic police department for their office. A civic official from the traffic department said that 20 years ago, there were 30,000 vehicles in the city. Now, the vehicular population has increased to around three lakh. Hence, more parking space was needed, he added.

R R Bhogale, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) for Pimpri Chinchwad, said, "The traffic police have demanded land for offices for six divisional police chowkeys in Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Sangvi, Nigdi, and Hinjewadi. The existing offices are small. The traffic police have also made a demand for provision of land in Kalakhadak area of Wakad under Hinjewadi traffic police."

An official in the town planning department said five locations have been identified for traffic offices. These will be inspected by the municipal commissioner and chief of town planning department and then a final decision will be taken

In February, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had directed civic bodies to provide land for offices of traffic divisions and sub-divisions and sought special drives to remove hawkers and other encroachments causing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

Tripunithura municipality is seeking the private-public partnership (PPP) route to develop the long-standing proposal of a bus terminal near the railway station.

A clearance from the Railways is awaited to send out the proposal for investor participation, said R. Venugopal, Chairman of the Municipal Council. Any project within 50 metres of a railway station requires high-level sanction.

The council has, in general, agreed to the proposal and is waiting for the sanction to put it up as a project report. The project planned on 12 acres and 60 cents envisages land acquisition in the area lying next to the railway station, which is a bunch of private holdings scattered among 18 individuals. The land cost alone would be over Rs.60 crore, said Mr. Venugopal.

The project requires five acres to develop roads to and from the terminal and seven acres to develop the terminal area. Another 60 cents of land would be required to rehabilitate 13 households, he said.

“The government is offering no assistance in land acquisition as it is one of the most time-consuming and difficult tasks. It cannot be put up as a project in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission because the mission does not fund land acquisition,” said Mr. Venugopal.
