Vadodara Municipal Corporation to invite fresh bids for bus service

VADODARA: The standing committee of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to call fresh tenders for the city bus service. The contract of the present operator expires next month.

The standing committee took the decision after detailed deliberations over the issue. The matter was brought to the committee last month, but an embargo over the premium paid by the operator, Vitcos Pvt Ltd, as well as debate over whether the same operator should be given an extension without tendering had led to the delay in arriving at a decision.

The proposal before the standing committee had stated that the service provider Vitcos Pvt Ltd should be allowed to continue with the service with a premium of Rs 19.61 lakh per annum against the Rs 18.55 lakh premium it paid since May 2008 when it began operations. At the other end, the service provider had recently stated that it was finding the operations a financial burden and the premium should be done away with. It had also raised a series of demands like providing it with a space for a depot, allowing it to operate diesel buses etc.

Some functionaries in the VMC also raised issues regarding the city bus service particularly the fact that it was not operating on all the routes that it had promised to ply buses on. Other issues were also raised regarding the operations of the service. The VMC opposition too had objected to the bus operator being given an extension without tendering. On Friday, the standing committee sent back the proposal for extension and sought fresh bids.

NDMC hikes parking rates

Now users will pay double the previous rate.

With the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) approving a hike in parking rates in areas under its jurisdiction, users of surface level parking facilities will have to dole out twice as much starting June.

The Council at its meeting on Wednesday approved a new parking policy which will rationalise the parking system and have increased rates based on the area and the opportunity cost involved.

Now users will have to pay Rs. 20 per hour (previously Rs. 10) and will pay an additional Rs. 20 for each hour subsequently. Effectively, a user will pay Rs. 100 for using the facility for five hours and above. The proposal for hiking parking rates was introduced for discussion in the Council meeting three times previously and was finally approved on Wednesday.

The NDMC’s revised tariff is less than the tariff previously approved by the Delhi Government which had suggested Rs. 30 for the first hour, Rs. 75 up to two hours, Rs. 105 up to four hours and Rs. 135 up to five hours.

Sources said one reason why the civic body has increased the surface level rates is to promote its multilevel parking projects such as the ones in Sarojini Nagar and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. These are not being utilised properly.

The parking rates prevalent in NDMC areas were the 2004 rates which collected Rs. 10 for the first two hours followed by Rs. 10 more for each additional hour. The NDMC has 54 parking lots.

Corporation plans new list of auto stands

KOCHI: The Kochi corporation has decided to make changes to the list of autorickshaw stands within the city limit. The decision has come in the wake of Kerala High Court order stating that autorickshaw and taxi stands can only be allowed after leaving at least one-and-a-half-metres vacant for pedestrians from the edge of the road.

The revised list with changes necessitated by the high court order will be presented before the council soon.

The corporation along with the city traffic police had already prepared a new list of auto stands in different parts of the city. "We are yet to receive the details of the HC order in this regard. However, we will effect changes in the list accordingly," said mayor Tony Chammany. In an effort to enhance public transport facilities, the civic body and police had prepared a list of 135 auto stands at different parts of the city. Besides the existing auto stands, officials had also handpicked a few more spots for new stands.

Officials with the motor vehicles department said they were planning to allot more city auto permits. Earlier, there were around 5,000 autorickshaws with city permits. "But a special drive conducted by the department found that only 1,385 autorickshaws had city permits. We will allot more permits to take the total to 4,000," said Ernakulam RTO, B J Antony.

Even before the high court order, the authorities had taken a decision to have stands only on roads having a width of seven metres.

But for taxis, there are only three stands in the city, namely at Palarivattom, Woodlands Junction and near Taj Malabar Hotel in Willngdon Island.

However, there are illegal taxi stands functioning in various parts of the city.
