Multi-level parking planned at CGO Complex

In order to solve the parking woes at CGO Complex on Lodhi Road, where several government and public-sector undertaking offices are located, the Urban Development Ministry has proposed the construction of a multi-level parking lot at the complex.

The proposal has been sent for Cabinet approval and is presently being scrutinised by the the financial committee, officials of Central Public Works Department (CPWD) said.

"We are thinking of renting space to two restaurants, each with a 100-plus seating capacity, and some shops, which will help us raise funds. While government-owned vehicles will be allowed to park for free, private vehicles will have to pay a parking fee. The parking site will be located within the complex," the official said.

The CGO complex presently sees bumper-to-bumper parking and is congested throughout office hours.

"With the number of vehicles coming to CGO Complex increasing substantially over the years, constructing a multi-level parking is the only way out. We have suggested alternative funding options such as creating commercial spaces to fund this project,'' the official said.

"Randomly parked vehicles along the roads leading to CGO Complex not only bring traffic to a crawl during peak hours, but also pose a security hazard. Once the parking facility comes up, these issues will be addressed," the official said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is contemplating a comprehensive law to address the parking issue in the city.

"A legislation is needed to check illegal parking. The number of vehicles that are being added to the roads is disproportionate to the land available for parking. Initiatives like encouraging the use of public transport, increasing tax on vehicle registration and parking fees and even the proposal to introduce congestion tax in Metros have not been able to check the rise in the number of private vehicles. It is, therefore, imperative to come up with alternatives," the official said.

The Municipal Corporation along with the traffic police on Thursday acted against the illegally parked vehicles in service lane in front of Hotel Park Plaza, one of the hotels with five star facilities in the city. ACP (Traffic) Dhruman Nimbale said that action was taken against the illegally parked vehicles in the service lane. The hotel had been issued notices in the past and told not to use the lanes for parking but illegal parking continued.

Despite funds, bus terminal project remains a non-starter

Though the Tripunithura Municipality has been earmarking funds   to construct a bus terminal here in its annual budget for the last 25 years,  the project still remains on paper.

Municipality sources told ‘City Express’ that despite the repeated fund allotment, the municipality has not even started land acquisition for the project.

“The proposed bus stand is coming up on the 12.5 acres of land. The land has  over 25 owners. Despite the fund allocation, the municipality has not even conducted a meeting with the land owners to start the land acquisition procedures,” they said.   The sources added that in the last year’s budget, the authorities had promised to collect `50 crore through debenture to implement the project. They had also offered shares to landowners who submit their land. “Though the offer gave the project a new life, the municipality continued with its lethargic attitude,” they added.

According to the sources, the land acquisition has became a difficult task    as the owners are trying to sell their land. “The land value is on a rise at Tripunithura. The owners believe that selling their land will fetch them more money. This is hindering the land acquisition process. We are afraid that the project will never take off,” they said.

Meanwhile, the residents at Tripunithura seek a speedy implementation of the project.

“The proposed bus terminal will connect SN Junction with a four-lane road that goes parallel to the railway track. The proposed bus stand will be a great relief to rail passengers who otherwise have to commute a long distance to reach the main bus stand. A huge number of passengers are depending on the Railway Dtation. This stresses on the need for a bus stand near the Railway station,” said Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Association  member V P Prasad.

However, Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal said the bus terminal  project will be implemented soon. “We will acquire the land for the bus terminal and more funds will be allocated in this years budget. Meetings will be arranged with the land owners to solve the acquisition issues,” he said.
